THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:
Should the city, with a $21.4 million surplus, financially assist the school district which is facing $7 million in budget cuts?
â– NO! Let’s get the city back on track, staff to efficient levels, streets/sewers fixed and where there is overlap, like use of school facilities for city programs, increase city participation for maintenance and repair.
â– Yes, some of the city’s surplus should be used for community needs. Possibly some going to vital needs of the school district, with the district being accountable for the spending; and other going to improve the downtown and therefore bringing in more businesses.
â– No. The city is not obligated to solve the district’s budget problems.
â– No. Sets a bad precedent. One agency that is acting proactively should not bail out one that has not.
â– These budgets and leadership teams are completely distinct. I am certain the school district wouldn’t send $7 million to the City of Gilroy if they had a budget deficit.
â– NO. The city’s surplus could well disappear within the next few years.
â– No. There is no end to the need of the school district. If the city wanted to temporarily adopt a program, that might offer assistance.
â– No, the city has its own issues and at the end of the budget process it probably won’t be a surplus at all!
â– It might be a good idea given the desperate budget deficit in the school district.
â– Gosh, that would be a great partnership boost! I like it. Maybe the water district could chip in as well.
