THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:

City Administrator Tom Haglund’s budget plan calls for an end to furloughs. It’s: 1. The right time; 2. Too early; 3. Don’t care

– Perhaps the right time. Taking salary cuts only because it seems the easiest way to alleviate some budget issues really doesn’t, nor hasn’t, addressed the heart of the issue. Because city employees chose to work for the city, why do people believe that cutting their work days is a viable option to save money overall? That’s pretty heartless, and needs to stop … to look outside the box about budget cutting, and to have those hard conversations.

– The decision to end department furloughs should include the public’s perception/need for those services delivered. It may be that citizens desire more from one sector but are completely happy with what they are currently receiving from another. Let’s make sure we spend money based on the needs of the people using the services, and not just because there are dollars available.

– I guess based on Tom’s numbers it is the right time.

– Too early! Even though the proposed City budget includes unanticipated sales tax growth, the slow recovery and jobs creation will likely linger or, at best, show modest growth over the next few years. Stay the course.

– The right time. If he believes its in the budget, I think it would be very encouraging to the people of Gilroy.

– Too early Would hate to see them re-started when we discover that we didn’t have THAT much revenue coming in after all.

– The right time. I suspect this is a pre-cursor to bringing back some positions that have been left vacant for a while. Can’t very well fill positions and still have people out on furlough.

– Too early, I’m sure they forgot something important in the budget!
