How to support the Shimek family

- A celebration of life for Lynn Shimek will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Fortino Winery, located at 4525 Hecker Pass Highway in Gilroy. The gathering will take place at 3 p.m. The service will commence at 3:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Donation boxes will be set up onsite for attendees wishing to donate to a fund established in support of the Shimek's two teen-age children. Fortino Winery said it is expecting up to 200 guests.

Donating to the needy

The Shrine Nomad caravan passed through Gilroy en route to the Shriner Children's Hospital in Sacramento on Oct. 30. They collected six barrels of toys from Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister, mainly from popular restaurants such as Sandy's in Gilroy, Betsy's in Morgan Hill and Jerry's in Hollister. The toys will be given to the children at the hospital on Christmas day.
