A 25-year-old man from Arizona was killed in a solo crash Thursday afternoon on McCloskey Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident was reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday west of Fairview Road in an unincorporated area of San Benito County.
The county coroner’s office Monday confirmed the man’s identity as Jorge Contreras, 25, of Yuma.
Contreras was in a 2013 Mazda 6 eastbound on McCloskey Road. Witnesses reported that he was driving at a high rate of speed and passing vehicles. For an unknown reason, he made an unsafe turn to the right, left the road and struck a dirt embankment. The car then went airborne and struck a mailbox, power pole and trees, according to the CHP.
The CHP reported he was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene.
