SAN JOSE – This year, the Santa Clara County Fair invites people to “Remember When,” combining modern entertainment with old-fashioned fun.
The fair runs from Friday, Aug. 6 to Sunday, Aug. 8.
Featured this year are Sunday’s demolition derby, a performance by country music singer Tim Murphy, a roving Elvis on stilts, and Rockets K-9 Comets.
The fair, which is held at the Santa Clara Count Fairgrounds on Tully Road off U.S. Highway 101, has a long history in Santa Clara County. Fairs have been held in the county since 1856, and the Fairgrounds itself became the permanent location in 1939. Currently, the fairgrounds encompasses more than 158 acres with seven major buildings, a 35,000-square-foot arena, five event stages and a satellite wagering facility.
Fair-goers can either come and watch the events, or compete in several themselves. The demolition derby is open to anyone over 16 years old, and offers a first prize of $1,500. Even those who don’t compete can vote for the winner, with the trophy going to the audience’s choice for “best appearing car” at the end of each round.
Other competition categories include livestock, home arts, fruits and vegetables, and floriculture.
Opening ceremonies start at 11:45 am on Friday, and the fair ends at midnight on Sunday.
