– County supervisors approved a resolution opposing a preemptive
strike by the U.S. military against Iraq Tuesday, just a day before
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell’s presentation to the United
Nations Security Council.
SAN JOSE – County supervisors approved a resolution opposing a preemptive strike by the U.S. military against Iraq Tuesday, just a day before U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell’s presentation to the United Nations Security Council.
The resolution, passed by a 4-0-1 vote, urges the federal government to allow more time for United Nations inspections and also asks that the nation take steps to become more energy sustaining. District 1 County Supervisor Don Gage, who represents Gilroy and Morgan Hill, abstained from the decision, citing his record of abstaining on matters not directly linked to county operations.
“What happens in this world affects us locally,” said board Chairwoman Blanca Alvarado of the decision. “We’re seeing a world that has many suffering people, and this destructive effort against Iraq will create deeper suffering, not just in Iraq but all over the world.”
The group South Bay Mobilization Against War began lobbying supervisors to take a stance on the potential conflict as early as last October.
“We believe the county and its elected officials have the constitutional right, indeed duty, to petition the national government on this matter of grave concern …” wrote group representative Julie Callahan.
