Lady Mustang softball suffers 7-2 home loss to San Benito to
fall out of playoff contention
GILROY – The Lady Mustang softball squad’s two-game winning league streak came to a crashing halt with Tuesday’s 7-2 home loss to San Benito High.
Gilroy, which has struggled with the lumber all season long, broke up Lady Haybaler hurler Danielle Hernandez’s no-hit bid in the final inning.
Sophomore Kayla Aldridge led off the seventh with a high hopper over third base for the Gilroy’s lone hit of the game. Senior Bria DeLorenzo was hit by a pitch. After another batter was hit, a walk and an error gave Gilroy its two runs.
San Benito banged out 16 hits. Hillary Williams led the way for the Balers, going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Kristen Archuleta, Rachelle Barrientos, JT Temperino, Megan C. Smith and Jenny Maheu all had multiple hits.
The Lady Haybalers opened up the game with five runs in the fifth inning. The Balers also scored single runs in the first and sixth innings to put Gilroy away.
The loss dropped the Lady Mustangs to 3-9 in T-CAL and 10-14 overall, eliminating them from playoff contention for the first time in six seasons.
Meanwhile, San Benito upped its league mark to 9-3 and 21-7 overall.
Gilroy still has three games remaining with back-to-back road games vs. Notre Dame on Thursday and North Salinas on May 11 followed by a May 13 home finale against Live Oak.
