Here’s your latest digest of criminal happenings in Gilroy, from assault with a deadly weapon, rape of a 16-year-old girl, domestic violence and driving under the influence.
Car burglary leads to police pursuit
On Mar. 11 at 1:21 a.m. someone phoned police and said there was a vehicle burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they saw two suspects taking items from a parked vehicle near the intersection of Longmeadow and Solana drives. The two men immediately fled on foot, according to GPD Sgt. Pedro Espinoza, and left behind an unreported vehicle they had apparently stolen in San Jose.
Eighteen-year-old Adrian Salas of San Jose stole another vehicle from the neighborhood while on the lam and as he drove by the officers who were looking for him, the GPD initiated a vehicle pursuit.
Salas was arrested later that morning in San Jose for grand theft and possession of stolen property. The other suspect is still outstanding, Espinoza said.
Felon arrested for DUI, police find loaded revolver and ammunition in vehicle
On Mar. 8 at 4:51 p.m. on the 700 block of First Street, a Newark man was arrested for driving under the influence after he allegedly fled the scene of a hit and run collision. When police attempted to administer a field sobriety test, 50-year-old Lloyd Kenneth Dibbern Jr. was not cooperative and physically resisted, according to Espinoza.
During a search of Dibbern Jr.’s vehicle, police discovered a loaded .357 revolver and 100 rounds of ammunition. Since the suspect is a convicted felon, police say, he was also arrested for illegal possession of a weapon, in addition to DUI, resisting arrest and hit and run.
Minor raped at a Gilroy party
On Mar. 7, a 16-year-old Gilroy girl – who is now pregnant – told the GPD she believed she was raped at a party in town on Dec. 19. During the course of the party, she said she became intoxicated and eventually passed out, according to police reports.
“It’s still a pretty solvable case,” Espinoza said. “The important thing is that she’s underage. If whoever raped her is overage – regardless of whether she gave consent – it’s against the law.”
GPD detectives are actively investigating the case, he added.
Violent domestic assault by boyfriend against girlfriend
On Mar. 15 at 11:18 p.m., the GPD responded to a violent call of domestic violence near the intersection of Third Street and Santa Paula Drive. Christian Alan Wong, 25 of Gilroy, allegedly struck his adult female girlfriend in the face and caused serious injuries to her face, according to police reports.
The victim was transported to St. Louise Regional Hospital for treatment, while Wong was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Santa Clara County Jail.
“In this case, he used his hands as weapons based on the amount of injuries she sustained,” Espinoza said, adding that Wong remains in jail.
Wife allegedly batters her husband
At 3:17 p.m. Mar. 15, the GPD responded to the 7300 block of Wren Avenue for a domestic violence case. Erica Lubich, 47 of Gilroy, was arrested after she allegedly battered her husband and left “severe scratches” on his face and neck, according to police reports.
