Here’s your weekly digest of criminal happenings in Gilroy, including a vehicle theft, child abuse, assault, sale and transportation of narcotics and an auto burglary.
Stimulant-fueled paranoia leads to arrest
Evan Pomin, 19, of Gilroy, was arrested at 7:46 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Gilroy Applebee’s restaurant for being under the influence of a controlled substance, after he repeatedly called 9-1-1 paranoid that someone was following him. Pomin first called 911 to report that between 20 and 30 subjects were following him and they were trying to take his money. He called 9-1-1 again, “just being irrational,” before GPD met with Pomin according to Espinoza. He displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence of methamphetamine.
Grabbed by unknown assailant
At 7 p.m. Oct. 17, a Gilroy woman reported that an unknown assailant grabbed her hair and pushed her to the ground on the 700 block of Tennyson Drive. She managed to escape after kicking the suspect and ran home. The suspect, described by the victim as an adult black male, is still at large, according to Gilroy Police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.

The GPD arrested 22-year-old Steven Nicholas Martinez, of Gilroy, for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property shortly after he was discovered sitting in a 2012 Chevy Cruze reported stolen on the 7500 block of Alexander Street. Authorities tracked the stolen car down after its OnStar locating system pinpointed the vehicle at Christmas Hill Park. Martinez was inside the vehicle when GPD responded at 2:03 p.m. He was booked in Santa Clara County Jail, Espinoza said.
Smash and grabber nabs iPad, digital camera
Two German tourists reported that between 2 and 6:40 p.m. Oct. 19, more than $1,000 worth of goods were stolen from their vehicle while they were shopping at the Gilroy Premium Outlets. The suspect or suspects smashed the driver’s side rear window of the victims’ rental vehicle and made off with a white, 16-gigabyte iPad (valued at $600), a Canon digital camera (valued at $400), a German drivers license, two international drivers licenses and a black shoulder bag. According to Espinoza, the incident was not captured on surveillance video and there is no information on the identity of the suspect or suspects.
Call from a tipster leads to Motel 6 drug sales bust
Miguel Anthony Ruiz, 43, of Hollister, and 25-year-old Lindsay Elizabeth Heinzen, of Gilroy, were arrested at Motel 6 on the 6100 block of Monterey Street for the sales and transportation of methamphetamine and for the sales of marijuana. Espinoza said someone staying at the motel called police about “lots of drug activity,” which led officer to investigate further. A search of the room and vehicle was conducted, the drugs were discovered and Ruiz and Heinzen were booked at the Santa Clara County Jail.
Child abuse
At 11:39 p.m. Oct. 20, police arrested 53-year-old Renee Carr, of Gilroy, for child abuse after an adult sibling reported an altercation between Carr and her children on the 500 block of Hoover Court. According to Espinoza, Carr displayed objective symptoms of alcohol intoxication and was booked in Santa Clara County Jail.
