Gilroy Police Department

This week, Gilroy police responded to thefts, burglaries, weapons violations and drug-related crimes. Here’s a few incidents:
Packing a pistol
John Kitaji, 57, was walking down Monterey Street when police contacted him at 2:29 p.m. on Au. 14 when they saw him carrying a pistol in plain sight.  He was also found with methamphetamine and a pipe. Kitaji allegedly resisted police commands, but after a brief struggle, he was contained and taken to Santa Clara County Jail.
Stolen barber pole
The barber pole outside Frank’s Barber Shop on Monterey Street was stolen sometime in the early morning hours of Aug. 15. The pole is worth $4,000, according to police reports.
 Drunk driving crash
Donald Magusa, 66, was arrested for driving under the influence after he was involved in a DUI collision on Mantelli Drive and Santa Teresa Boulevard.
 Drunk driving arrest
An erratic driver was pulled over by police at 1:28 a.m. on Aug. 17. The driver, Niya Tonkin, 20, was arrested for driving under the influence. She was later released with a promise to appear in court.
Stuffing a coat with stuff
Even on a warm summer day, Ana Vargas, 36, wore a jacket – allegedly to stuff stolen items in its lining. At 5:16 p.m., officers said they caught her attempting to steal jewelry, clothes and perfume from Kohl’s on Camino Arroyo. They also found stolen items from Ross Dress for Less in the lining of her coat. Vargas was taken to the county jail.
Drugs and burglary tools arrest
Steve Ojeda, 42, was arrested for possession of drugs and burglary tools on West Seventh Street at 1:56 p.m. on Aug. 18.
