Let Elected Officials Run The City

Rant about railroad crossings

I was sitting at the crossroads at the railroad station on 10th Street. The warning things were down and three people went around them. You could hear the train whistle and three people jetted across and around the boundary. I thought I’d share that this dangerous practice is happening in Gilroy, and we know that few months back a girl got killed when her boyfriend tried to do that to beat a train in Morgan Hill.

Red Phone:

Red Phone has see this too – on Leavesley Avenue and Monterey Road, on 10th Street, and at just about every railroad crossing in town. It’s been collecting license plate numbers and writing scathing railroad reminder notes to mail. It’s a real shame that some drivers in Gilroy are in such a hurry to go nowhere that they risk their own safety and the safety of their passengers to avoid a short wait stopping for a train.

Look, we live in a city where the wheels of industry charge through. Part of living here is stopping for it. It is frustrating when a train adds extra time to your commute, yes, but it’s something drivers need to recognize and deal with. Leave a few minutes early to give yourself extra time. STOP FOR TRAINS!!!

Here’s an option: when you see a “RR” sign think “Red Phone Rant.” Take those few minutes in stopped traffic to call the Red Phone to vent about how much you hate stopping for trains. Red phone could use some calls on subjects other than city council’s elaborate spending anyway.

Festival remains

Hi again, Red Phone! I’m sure the responsible individuals promising the GavFest signs’ removal by last Friday were sincere, however, their Santa Teresa Boulevard and San Martin Avenue volunteer must be AWOL. Thanks for your help!

Red Phone:

Dear Caller, Friday Red Phone spoke to Jan Bernstein-Chargin, public information officer for Gavilan College. She said the college’s maintenance crew had been put on task to remove all the leftover GavFest signs in town from the April 27 event . She specifically mentioned sending the crew out to tear down signs on Highway 25 and Santa Teresa Boulevard. At this point all GavFest remains should be disposed. But, if you see still see them, please call her office with the location at 848-4724.
