The Gilroy High varsity girls cross country team found a late push from Jessica Arciga quite useful in a close 24-33 victory over Notre Dame on Monday in Salinas.

Arciga pasted a Spirits runner with about 800 meters remaining in the 3.1-mile race, to capture eighth place and secure the outcome-altering points, which lifted the Mustangs to 3-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

Notre Dame’s Alex Lathos finished first overall with a time of 19 minutes, 50.8 seconds. Gilroy swept the next three spots with Athena Alarcon (20:42), Savannah Silacci (20:50) and Maritza Ruelas (20:53) placing second, third and fourth, respectively.

Noemi Rivera (seventh) and Sorayma Perez, who posted a career best at Salinas’ Toro Park with a 23:28, round out the Mustangs lineup.

On the boys’ side, Ryan Swenor clocked Gilroy’s fastest time of the day with his 18:08, however, Palma grabbed the top-three spots to claim a 21-36 win.

“Our boys are running the times they ran at this time last year,” coach Cathy Silva said. “They have been working hard in practice, putting in a good effort during the races. We are now adjusting the workouts and expect to see faster times as the season progresses.”

Gabe Contreras, who placed seventh, eclipsed his previous best time at Toro Park by more than a minute with his 18:30, while Bryan Kachakji, who earned a varsity spot after his performance last week, recorded a 19:34, which was his top time in Salinas.
