Gilroy High School’s girls junior varsity cross country team placed first in the Chieftain Invitational Saturday.

The cross country team competed against 25 different schools at Toro Park.

Freshman Brandie Rodriguez ran the three-mile course in 22:16 to place third. Sophomore Christine Bobula ran a 22:27, placing fourth, and senior Megan Litle ran in 23:40, placing 15th.

The junior varsity football team currently is sitting at 3-0 after defeating Oak Grove High School last Friday night 14-7. Sophomore Sean Hale scored both touchdowns. Tony Travis had an interception for the Mustangs.

“Our entire defense played well,” said junior varsity coach Jack Daley. “Richie Sotelo ran the ball well.”

Gilroy High will be playing at home tonight against Serra High School.

“It ought to be a good game,” said Daley. “They are a well conditioned team.”

The junior varsity field hockey team shut out Carmel High School 10-0 Wednesday evening at home. Scoring two goals each were Pricilla Del Villar, Alex Cabreros and Danielle Zappa.

The junior varsity volleyball team lost 25-12 and 25-4 against San Benito High School, and fell 23-25, 25-14, 15-12 to Everett Alvarez.
