Money shortage?

“It seems strange to me that Gavilan College is so deficient of money that they have to shut the place down every Friday and curtail, not only classes, but other activities such as swimming and the like. If they are that poor how can they even consider buying property for expansion, when they can’t even keep the school open long enough for the students to get an education?”

Red Phone:

The bulk of Gavilan College’s classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday, but the campus is open on Fridays for some classes and all the offices are open, said Gavilan Spokeswoman Jan Bernstein Chargin. Now that Gavilan is on a block schedule, the majority of classes are Monday and Wednesday or Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“It allows students to save gas by not making the drive everyday,” said Chargin.

Also, Gavilan is looking at adding Friday-only classes in the future.

If a swimming class is scheduled on Fridays the pool is open but since it’s not open to the community, it’s closed when there are no classes.

In reference to Gavilan being in the poorhouse, the land purchase has nothing to do with the college’s fiscal situation. The expansion of the campus was funded by Measure E, a general obligation bond that was approved voters in March 2004, Measure E bond measure.

Relief on the levee

“I have a comment on the levee. We really enjoy walking the levee. However, it would be nice if someone would consider putting an outhouse or something. It’s quite a distance when you have to bring water with you and you have to use the restroom. I understand there’d probably be graffiti and stuff and that’s why we don’t have one. But I was wondering if anyone has considered that. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

Your Red Phone contacted Carla Ruigh, the City of Gilroy’s Operations Manager, who said there are stops along the levee walk should someone need them.

“There are currently two restrooms available at Christmas Hill Park – one near the amphitheater and a second one near the Mulberry picnic area,” she said. “There will also be a restroom available in the sports park, which will be the southern terminus of the trail when the sports park is completed.”

Fallen tree

“Hey Red Phone. There’s been a huge oak tree that has fallen on the eighth fairway on the Gilroy Golf Course. It’s been there for months. I wonder when the city is going to clean it up. Thanks Red Phone. Appreciate all your help.”

Red Phone: According to Don DeLorenzo, the tree fell Jan. 2. “Due to the fact that was the wettest spot on the golf course we had to wait for it to dry up before we got in there,” he said. According to DeLorenzo, about half of the tree was cut up and hauled away the weekend before last and the rest was to be completed this past weekend.

So, good caller, play through.
