And yet, the Mustangs still haven’t figured a way out of third place. That’s because they have been involved in so many ties this season. Some ties, however, hurt worse than others.

That was the case Thursday when Gilroy and Notre Dame deadlocked 2-2 at California State University-Monterey Bay.

The Mustangs never trailed in the game and, in fact, were tied in the final minute on a header off a direct kick. It left the girls a little glum but with little time to feel sorry for themselves with TCAL-leading North Salinas coming to Gilroy for a 10am game Saturday.

“We’re aiming for our first league title,” coach Jose Hernandez said. “Our goal was to win our last four games and send a clear message. The girls are a little down because they were not able to do it.”

Freshman Ariana Carrillo gave GHS (7-4-6 overall, 4-1-4 TCAL) a 1-0 lead when she scored 15 minutes into the game. It was 1-0 at halftime.

Notre Dame (9-5-6, 3-4-2) got the equalizer 15 minutes into the second half on a penalty kick after a hand ball.

Midway through the second half, Kristi Figueroa put the Mustangs on top 2-1 with her sixth goal of the season. Nubia Diaz de Leon and Ariana Vera had assists for the Mustangs, who had 14 shots on goal.

“The two goals we allowed were on stop plays,” Hernandez said. “We didn’t take advantage of what we needed to. We had other opportunities. We’re making mistakes we shouldn’t be making at this point of the season.”
