First it was Danny Contreras making amends. Then it was Jacob Dexter.

One day after Contreras made a running catch to save Gilroy, Dexter made two diving catches in left field Wednesday as GHS rallied for a 6-4 win over Monte Vista Christian in 10 innings in the Peninsula Easter Classic.

After playing small ball for nine innings, hot-hitting Tyler Osborne and Matt Hemeon hit solo home runs in the 10th inning to lift GHS.

With the win, Gilroy joined Fremont and Pacific Grove in finishing 2-1 in pool play. The bad news for GHS was it got the bad draw and will have to play two games today at North Monterey County to advance. Gilroy faces MVC again at 10am, and then has to come back at 1pm to take on Robert Louis Stevenson School.

Contreras and Dexter each made errors which led to a seven-run first inning Monday and 11-6 win by Fremont. Contreras’ catch was the big play as Gilroy (15-9) turned things around Tuesday in a 5-2 win over Pacific Grove. Each made significant contributions to Gilroy’s win Wednesday.

“The guys at times have no conscience whatsoever,” GHS coach Clint Wheeler said. “They are able to put things behind them very quickly.”

Contreras pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Kevin Grove, allowing three hits and striking out three. He was helped by Dexter’s diving catch in the seventh.

“We knew this week with the tournament that everyone would have to get out and contribute,” Wheeler said. “We looked at (Contreras) as a possible closer. He and (Michael) Stevens are similar types of guys.”

MVC (9-10) forged a 4-0 lead through four innings behind the pitching of Justin Burns. Gilroy broke through for a fifth-inning run and tied the game in the seventh with Osborne knocking in a run with a single, and Dexter and Hemeon drawing bases-loaded walks.

“It was a big win,” Wheeler said. “We’re still battling through some issues. For four innings we were flat. Grove didn’t have his best control but he battled through six innings. We got unlucky with the (third) seed. We just have to win twice (today).”

And they first have to match up with the same team 18 hours later. Dexter gets the nod against MVC. Osborne, Salter and Stevens will all be available to pitch in the second game.
