LOFTY IDEAS FOR DOWNTOWN
Dear Red Phone:
Does the city or a developer have any plans to create live/work spaces for artists in the vacant buildings in downtown? Many cities develop old industry buildings into arts scenes. I know Gilroy wants to develop it’s downtown, and I would love to see Gilroy make a move in that direction, as I’m sure other local artists would as well.

Dear Art Seen:
Red Phone agrees. City life emerges from a vibrant arts scene. When artists and businesses get together, they can really drive each other’s efforts to support a strong local culture and creative economy. Red Phone found out that the new cannery project includes live/work lofts, as does a project slated to rise just south of Platinum Theaters on Monterey Road. Both projects should be completed within three years.
RUN AND HIT, HIT AND RUN
Dear Red Phone:
There is a dead animal on the 101 freeway heading southbound on the left hand side that has been there for at least a week. I believe it is located right before the Masten exit. It makes me cry like every time I drive by. Who do you call for roadkill removal, both in the county and city limits? Also, can you mention that humans and animals share this planet and we need to respect each other and take care to not disrupt their habitat and lives and that drivers need to be careful on the road because if you are not paying enough attention to the road that you hit an animal, then you could easily be hitting a human the next time, you know?
Red Phone:
Dear Habitat for Humanity:
It wasn’t so long ago this was the wild, wild west. And, just like the wildlife surrounding us, California drivers are a breed of their own – they drive fast and furiously, most times on a cell phone. It’s important to slow down for a minute and realize the dangers in that, and remain alert. Though, any California driver knows there are some animals that take kamikaze sprints into the roadways here. If you hit one of California’s creatures, respect its life enough to use your cell phone to notify authorities as you drive away. The contact in the city is Animal Control at 846-0350, and in the county it is the Division of Animal Control and Care at 465-2920, Ext. 0.
BOMBS TAKEN AWAY
Dear Red Phone:
Around 3 p.m. on Sunday July 15, a SUV parked itself in the intersection of Calle Del Rey and Longmeadow. The driver got out and for two hours directed traffic to avoid eastbound on Longmeadow because of a bomb threat near Mantelli. Any idea what that was about?
Red Phone:
Dear Exploding Question:
What you’re referring to are what police described as minor explosives that were found in a home on Lone Deer Way Sunday. The bomb squad worked to remove the devices from a former daycare facility while police evacuated neighbors within 300 feet of the vacant home. (See “Bombs Found in Home,” July 17.)
