Election officers needed

Gilroy – The Registrar of Voters is looking for civic-minded volunteers to serve at the polls election day. Becoming an election officer is a great way for voters to serve their communities and contribute to the democratic process. Election officers are paid a stipend of $85 or more. Volunteers are needed at polling places throughout Santa Clara County. Anyone who is registered to vote in California can be an election officer.

Registrar begins mailing ballots

Gilroy – Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters is mailing sample ballots for the Nov. 7 Gubernatorial General Election. The Sample ballot and voter information pamphlet contains instructions for voting and information about local candidates and measures, the voter’s assigned polling place location and an application for absentee voting. The last day to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 23.

Winter donations for homeless

Gilroy – St. Joseph’s Family Center and Articulate Solutions are continuing their efforts to help keep the homeless in our community warm and dry throughout the winter. Donations needed to help purchase and assemble Winter Survival Kits. The kits will contain items that will be helpful during the cold winter months: water repellent sleeping bags and jackets, backpacks, knit caps and gloves, flashlights and sundries such as toothpaste, socks and soap.

Checks may be written out to St. Joseph’s Family Center. Please mark your check “Winter Survival Kit.” Donations may be mailed to St. Joseph’s, 7950 Church S., Suite A, Gilroy or Articulate Solutions, 65 Fifth Ave., Suite 100, Gilroy.

‘Fiddler on the Roof’ concludes

Gilroy – Performances at the Gilroy High School Theater, 750 W. 10th St., Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14. Evening performances at 7pm and Saturday matinee at 2pm. All tickets are $10 each, open seating.

AKC responsible dog ownership day

Gilroy – The Gavilan Kennel Club is hosting responsible dog ownership day in an effort to help dog owners raise happy, healthy dogs. Sunday Oct. 15, 10am to 3pm at Christmas Hill Park. Activities include demos, microchipping, vaccinations and more.

‘Soul Terrain’ auditions

Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie Present auditions for “Soul Terrain”. Motown meets the jungle in this all singing, all dancing wild revue. Auditions will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna Street. Ages 5 to10 1pm, ages 11 to 14, 2:30pm and ages 15 to 18, 4pm. Please prepare to sing a short song without music and wear comfortable clothing.

Kids enjoy fall festival

San Martin – Approximately 50 Las Madres kids, up to 5 years of age, get dressed up in Halloween costumes and enjoy running around the park, doing arts and crafts, picking out pumpkins and eating a potluck, from 11am to 1pm Oct. 21 at San Martin County Park. On Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 9:30 to 11am at Gilroy Senior Center a costume party with about 20 Gilroy Las Madres kids, up to 5 years of age, get dressed up in Halloween costumes and “entertain” the seniors. A craft project and snacks complete the fun.

One man’s trash, another’s treasure

San Martin – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) will host their annual Rummage Sale on Friday, Oct. 13 noon to 5pm and Saturday Oct. 14, 8am to 4pm, at the San Martin Animal Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave. Proceeds from the rummage sale benefit the many homeless animals in the shelter’s care.
