GILROY
– Team Gilroy Volunteers have put in 19,696 hours of volunteer
time in Gilroy city programs. This is the largest amount of time
given in the nine years of the Volunteer Service Program. Volunteer
supervisors thank all those people who have helped. There will be a
volunteer recognition reception on
Thursday, April 24 at 6 p.m. at the Gilroy Senior Center.
Clean water hotline
SAN MARTIN – The Santa Clara Valley Water District has closed the Perchlorate Hotline 265-2607, ext. 2649, because most residents of San Martin and Morgan Hill eligible for free testing of their wells have made arrangements for sampling. In case some have not yet scheduled free well-testing or the study area is expanded, the toll-free phone number will be fully staffed,

Holiday train schedule
GILROY – Caltrain will operate a modified schedule on President’s Day, Monday, Feb. 17. There will be 62 trains running between San Francisco and San Jose, with four trains serving Gilroy. Caltrain usually operates 76 trains on weekdays. The modified schedule is posted at stations, located on trains and available at www.caltrain.com.
Family night out
GILROY – Come to the Wheeler Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a night of fun with your family. Play games, do arts and crafts, sing karaoke, get out your energy in the jump house and enjoy refreshments. The fee is $25 for a family of four and $5 for each additional member. There is no fee for children under 2 years. An adult must accompany all children. The event will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Details: 848-0423.
‘Lend me a Tenor’
MORGAN HILL – South Valley Civic Theatre presents ‘Lend me a Tenor,’ an adult comedy about the mishaps of a world famous tenor during opening night 1934 at the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. Performances are held at Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, on the corner of Monterey Road and Dunne Avenue. 8 p.m. performances are held on Feb. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and March 1 with a 2 p.m. matinee on Feb. 23. Postal service on Monday
SAN JOSE – San Jose District Manager Kevin Brown has announced regular collection box pick-up on President’s Day. To provide service and customer convenience, collection boxes throughout the San Jose District will be picked-up on President’s Day. The Postal Service suggests that customers deposit their mail as they would any other day. The Postal Service will be processing all mail collected on the holiday.
Cal grant workshop
GILROY – Many students and their families find it difficult to complete college app-lications without assis-tance. Assem-bly-member Simon Salinas, in coord-ination with the California Student Aid Commission, and various local universities and colleges have joined to sponsor workshops to provide help completing applications for the 2003-2004 academic year. March 3 is the deadline for high school seniors to submit completed federal financial aid forms necessary to apply for Cal Grant. A workshop will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., 1 to 4 p.m. Details: (916) 319-2028.
Assistance League grants
GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting grant requests for 2003. Last year, GALS gave out over $9,000 to various local youth causes, including Brownell Academy Music Department, Gilroy Community Youth Center, GHS Grad Night, and St. Joseph’s Family Center.
