GILROY – Learn how to get started the right way by participating in a seminar presented by the Gavilan College Small Business Development Center. It will provide an overview of marketing essentials, product selection, business goal setting, legal issues, licenses required, risk evaluation, bookkeeping, financing and management issues. Help assault victims
GILROY – A 60-hour state certified domestic violence and sexual assault training will take place Tuesday, March 4 through April 12. The training, which will take place at Community Solutions, prepares people to volunteer with a domestic violence or sexual assault agency. Become a qualified domestic violence and sexual assault advocate and empower victims and help prevent further violence in our community. Sounds of a brass band
GILROY – The South Valley Symphony is bringing back the “British Style” Pacific Brass Band to perform at the Gilroy High School theater on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at Porcella’s Music and California Music Company in downtown Gilroy and Snappy Photo located at 785 First St. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors age 55 and up and $7 for students age 12 to 18. Bandmaster, Gonzalo H. Viales C. and Associate Bandmaster, Howard Miyata will lead the 35-member band. The repertoire of the band consists of traditional Brass Band music, as well as, American folk songs, rags, marches and selections from musical theater. Details:

‘Lend me a Tenor’
MORGAN HILL – South Valley Civic Theatre presents “Lend me a Tenor,” an adult comedy about the mishaps of a world famous tenor during opening night 1934 at the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. The last chance to see the play is this weekend at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, on the corner of Monterey Road and Dunne Avenue. ‘Sugar’ auditions
MORGAN HILL – Auditions for South Valley Civic Theatre’s production of “Sugar” – a musical version of “Some Like It Hot” – will be held at the Maple Leaf RV Park, 15200 Monterey Highway on Friday, Feb. 28 (check in at 6:30 p.m.) and Saturday, March 1 (check in at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.)
Bring a resume and picture. Be prepared to sing for no longer than one minute and bring sheet music. Wear clothes and footwear suitable for dancing. They are looking for “tappers.” Rehearsals will be Monday through Thursday evenings beginning March 11. Performances will be May 16, 17, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, June 1, 6 and 7. Backpacking adventure
MORGAN HILL – Henry Coe State Park is holding three sessions for beginning and intermediate backpacking. There will be a classroom session on Saturday, March 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by a 5 mile backpacking trip on March 22 and a four day trip April 10 through 13. Serve on the Grand Jury
SAN JOSE – The Honorable Thomas Hansen, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court is seeking volunteers to serve on the 2003-2004 Civil Grand Jury, whose term will commence on June 26. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age and residents of Santa Clara County for one year prior to serving. The Court is seeking men and women of all ethnic backgrounds with proportional representation from each supervisorial district.The deadline for submitting applications is March 17. Details: 882-2721.
