Car off Pole Line Road

GILROY – Two people escaped disaster Wednesday night when their 1989 Ford Explorer went off the side of Pole Line Road and fell 75 feet.

The two, a 43-year-old female driver and 15-year-old female passenger whose names were unavailable, were released without any injuries after their vehicle fell down the side of the hill and into the base of a redwood tree.

“They plunged 75 feet over the side and then hit a redwood tree head-on,” said Mike Mathieson, public information officer for South Santa Clara Fire. “It was on about a 100-degree slope.”

Engine No. 3 from Hecker Pass was the first on the scene, and lowered a paramedic down to check on the two women, who were unharmed.

“Neither one, amazingly, was injured, but neither one was able to get back up,” Mathieson said.

Pajaro Valley Fire Department came to help out with a rope rescue.

“They assisted with the technical rope rescue system,” Mathieson said.

First the driver was lifted to safety, and then the 15-year-old passenger. It took an hour to complete the rescue.

“These people were very fortunate,” he said. “There was no injuries, but it was a very technical rescue.”

Jackson oaks water problem

MORGAN HILL – Residents of 150 homes in Jackson Oaks turned on their showers Thursday morning to find only a trickle of water.

The Public Works Department was called at 4 a.m. with reports of an 80 ft. high spurt of water coming from an underground pipe at the Jackson Oaks Booster Station, according to Jim Ashcraft, public works director.

“A bolt in a mechanical joint had apparently vibrated out during the night,” he said, leaving a small hole about 1 inch in diameter. Water was escaping through the hole in the pipe at 230 pounds of pressure, enough to undermine a large section of asphalt directly above the hole.

By 8 a.m. city crews had shut off the water and dug down to expose the pipe. The asphalt in danger of further collapse was marked off by a white line and workers and supervisors were gingerly avoiding the area.

Ashcraft said they hoped to have normal water service returned by 8:30 or 9 a.m. The Jackson Oaks Booster Station, on East Dunne Avenue just north of Hill Road, pumps water up the hill into Fountain Oaks, Jackson Oaks and Holiday Lake Estates – approximately 1,000 homes.

“This is the first time I’ve ever seen a problem like this,” Ashcraft said.
