GILROY – Gilroy Community Services is offering a Lifeguard Training Class at Gilroy High School Pool on April 5 and 6, 12 and 13 from 9 to 5 p.m. The class will offer certification as a Lifeguard. The instructor will be Aaron Bueno from the City of Milpitas Aquatics Center. Pre-registration is required and is done through Gilroy Community Services. 32 hours are required to complete the certification therefore participants must plan to attend all four dates. All those who complete the class will be given applications to apply for the Gilroy Community Services’ summer aquatic staff. Cost for the class will be $60. Spaces are limited so register early. Design a Gilroy flag
GILROY – Proud of your city? Then why not show your true colors – through art. Gilroy’s Youth Commission is currently holding a contest to design a “city flag” for Gilroy. The contest is open to all Gilroy residents. Flag designs should depict the city’s rich cultural heritage, use colors, be tasteful and creative and may use all or part of the current City of Gilroy’s symbols. Design entries must be submitted on 24-by-36 inch poster board, in color and be accompanied by a project entry form, which can be obtained at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Entries are due by the closure of City Hall on Friday, April 18 and can be submitted to the Community Services Department, 7351 Rosanna St. The winner receives no monetary compensation. After the contest ends, the Youth Commission will select five finalists and present them to the City Council, who will choose one design. The city plans to stage an inaugural flag-raising ceremony at the city’s Garlic Festival in July.
Flea market fundraiser
GILROY – The Senior Advisory Board is holding a flea market which is open to the public on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to raise money. Tables cost $10 each and the flea market will be located at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. Details: 848-0465.
Walk on the wild side
MORGAN HILL – Join Dr. Jane Haley, a National Park docent for 20 years and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center volunteer, on Saturday, April 5 from 9 to 11 a.m. along Coyote Creek for the fourth in a series of five bird walks. Participants will discover an appreciation for local birds, their habitat and ecological importance. You can attend one or all of the walks. Due to the terrain, these walks are not recommended for young children. The program is free, space is limited and reservations are required. Details: 779-9372.
Gavilan College library open to all
GILROY – Does your high school student need help writing a term paper? Looking for articles to further your career or enhance your hobbies? Do you become frustrated surfing the Internet for specific information, only to find mostly irrelevant Web sites? Come to the Gavilan College Library and try our state of the art electronic databases. Find magazine or newspaper articles from our periodical collection. With a photo I.D., you can even check out books from our circulating collection. The library is located at the center of the Gavilan College Gilroy Campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Library hours this semester are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Details: 848-4806.
An evening under the moon and stars
LOS BANOS – Enjoy a guided tour of the brilliant evening sky on Saturday, April 5 from sunset until 10 p.m. at Pacheco State Park on Highway 152. Volunteer astronomers will set up a variety of telescopes for a public viewing starting at 6:30 p.m. Visitors are also invited to spend the afternoon hiking or bicycling the park’s nearly 25 miles of rolling hills carpeted with wildflowers. Participants should pack their lunch or dinner and carry plenty of drinking water, as there is no potable water available at the park. Bring a flashlight and warm, layered clothing and sturdy shoes. Picnic tables, fire rings, barbecues and chemical toilets are available. The entrance fee is $4 per car. Pacheco State Park is located on Dinosaur Point Road off of Highway 152. Aviation scholarships
SAN MARTIN – The South County Airport Pilot’s Association (SCAPA), a non-profit organization, has funded two aviation scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded annually to promising young men or women who have a serious interest in aviation-related careers. The awards are $500 each. Recipients must be enrolled in and plan to continue a college curriculum leading to a degree in the field of aviation, or, for high schoolers, must be accepted to a two- or four- year-college with a major in an aviation-related field. The initial funding has been generated through generous donations from the Gilroy PAL, significant individual donors and other fund-raising events. The SCAPA goal is to increase the number and amount of awards as funding increases.
