Scarecrow show-off contest

GILROY– Bonfante Gardens is looking for scarecrows to help decorate the park during the month of October. So it’s holding a contest and giving away 50 complimentary day passes to Bonfante Gardens to any group who enters. In order to enter you must:

• get your group together – class, business, nonprofit organization, boy scout troop, brownie troop, day care centers, churches and clubs,

• create your full-size scarecrow to be displayed at Bonfante Gardens,

• contact Lizz Hunter at lizz.hunter@bonfantegardens.

com to let her know your organization’s name and arrange a time to bring her your scarecrow and receive your complimentary passes,

• be prepared to advise her on what you would like the sign to say that will be displayed with your scarecrow.

Citizens get arrested

GILROY – The Gilroy community will join to raise “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. On Wednesday, Sept. 24, more than 100 “jailbirds” will be escorted by “law enforcement officials” to a mock jail site at Chevy’s Fresh Mex. They will have their mugs shots taken and serve one hour of “hard time” to raise $1,575 for the 450 families in the South Bay affected by muscular dystrophy. Details: Christine Omata at 244-1210.

Ninth annual wine tour

Taste of Morgan hill

MORGAN HILL – The 14th annual Taste of Morgan Hill will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 and 28.

The festival is held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Morgan Hill, expanding over six blocks on Monterey Road from Main to Dunne avenues and First through Fifth streets. The festival offers free admission, parking and secured bicycle parking on West First Street where you will receive a free water bottle from Specialized Bikes.

Take a cat home

SAN MARTIN – The San Martin Animal Shelter is currently caring for nearly 300 cats and kittens. They are desperately trying to save them all, but need people’s assistance to accomplish this. People can help by adopting a new pet, agreeing to care for a barn cat on their land, becoming a cat foster home, volunteering to clean cages at the shelter or making a tax-deductible donation of money or supplies to the shelter.
