Walk in wonder woods

GILROY – Go on a ‘Redwood Hike’ at Mt. Madonna from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 26. Explore the amazing redwood forest and discover the many wonders of this unique ecosystem on this two-mile hike with a park ranger.

Bring hiking shoes, layered clothing, water and sun protection.

A $4 vehicle fee to enter the park will apply. Mt Madonna Park is located at 7959 Poleline Road.

Viva Victorian

GILROY – The Ancestral Voices Lecture Series presents ‘Wives and Widows: Victorian Wedding Gowns and Mourning Dresses,’ on Saturday June 26, starting at 2 p.m., at Gilroy Public Library, 7387 Rosanna St.

The event features vintage clothing collector Kristiane Maas, a light high tea, and vintage roses. Seating is limited so please arrive early.

Wine weekend

GILROY – Solis Winery, 3920 Hecker Pass Highway, will host ‘Simply Whites and Premium Reds’ from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27.

Come enjoy barrel tasting of their 2003 Chardonnay Estate and two of their Premium Red Wines. No reservations are needed. Tasting fee is only $7.50, or free to club members.

Dogs get social

GILROY – The second annual ‘Gilroy GRR-Lic Dog Walk in the Park’ will be held on Sunday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Christmas Hill Park.

Enjoy a day of fun with your furry pal or just come support local furry friends. A raffle, costumes and look-alike contests, photos, prizes, T-shirts and more will be featured.

The costume contest, with prizes of $50, $25 or $10, will be judged from photos and participants will be notified.

One dog per walker. Walkers younger than 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Only friendly dogs older than 4 months with current vaccinations will be admitted.

Please no female dogs in heat. Bring comfortable shoes.

A donation of $15 per pet or $25 for two pets will go toward benefiting the Friends of San Martin Anmal Shelter. There will be a mandatory liability release for the event.

Be a life giver

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy Community Blood Drive on Thursday, July 8, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.

To donate blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.

American Red Cross volunteer blood donors are required to provide identification before donating blood. Preferred identification includes a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card. Save time and make an appointment.

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will hold ‘Get Your Business Up and Running’ on Thursday, July 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC offices located in the Dry Creek Village, 8351 Church St. Bldg. E.

The workshop will present an overview of marketing essentials, produce selection, business goal setting, legal issues, licenses required, risk evaluation, bookkeeping, financing and management issues.

Attend this workshop and get your questions answered. Cost is only $20, payable in advance or at the door.

GILROY – The Gilroy Economic Development Corporation presents ‘Workplace Skills in a Retail Environment’ at the Gavilan College SBDC office in the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Building E, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 9 and Saturday, July 31.

This free eight-hour training course will help students learn the basics of working in retail.

The instructor will review working in a retail environment, principles of customer service, work attitudes and ethics, business communication, dealing with difficult people, handling money, cashiering and scanning practices.
