GILROY – A $1,000 grand prize is being offered by New Jersey Rainbow Poets in a free religious poetry contest. There are 50 prizes in all, totaling almost $5,000.
Participation is open to everyone interested. Any denomination or faith is accepted. Poems entered may have an opportunity to be published in a luxurious anthology.

Be a life giver
GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy Community Blood Drive on Thursday, July 8, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.
To donate blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Volunteer blood donors are required to provide identification before donating blood. Preferred identification includes a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card. Save time and make an appointment.

Run for the arts
GILROY – Bonfante Gardens presents the ‘2004 Reek 5/10K Walk/Run Race’ on Saturday, July 10. Proceeds will benefit the Gilroy Performing Arts Center. Registration will be at 6:45 a.m. and the race will start at 8 a.m. Bonfante Gardens Theme Park has two moderate hills.
Cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt, one free admission to Bonfante Gardens, free parking and a goodie bag. Pick up T-shirts, goodies bag and racing bib Friday evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Gilroy Hilton Garden Inn or on race day.

GILROY – Enjoy a walk through Bonfante Gardens’ exotic greenhouse and Claudia’s Garden with Horticulturist Richard Soria during ‘Monarch and Claudia’s Gardens’ from 8 to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 10.
Learn to recognize bad insects and their life cycles, and identify various conifers and topiaries.
Registration fee of $25 or $30 to non-residents also includes admission to the park and free parking.

GILROY – South Valley Street Rods and Historic Downtown Gilroy present the fourth annual ‘Garlic City Fun Run’ on Saturday, July 10, from 3:30 to 10 p.m.
Come and join the fun with live music, dancing, shopping, and great food at the ‘Mini’ Gourmet Alley downtown.

GILROY – Bonfante Gardens, 3050 Hecker Pass Highway, presents ‘Rod and Classic Car Show’ on Sunday, July 11.
Walk down memory lane or create new ones with more than 200 American Rod and Classic Cars from the 1920s through 1950s.
Visit with car owners and explore the evolution of the American automobile
The event is free with park admission.
Get in the moonlight
SAN JOSE – On Thursday, July 1, become a night explorer with ‘Full Moon Paddle on Calero Reservoir’ from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Discover local history and wildlife with park staff on a late night tour of Calero Reservoir.
Meet at the reservoir launch ramp with your kayak/canoe, life jacket and glow stick. Reservations are required.
