Swing to ’50s music with a special appearance from the King himself! Enjoy karaoke, a silent and live auction with lots of antiques to bid on, door prizes, cool raffle items from local businesses and even some old cars to ride back into time with.
Old fashioned dinners such as hamburgers, chips and rootbeer malts will be available for purchase.
Old car owners are encouraged to bring them to share and display. Cost is $5 per person and all proceeds go toward ACHS scholarships.
Ticket purchase is preferred in advance as space is limited, but not required.

Car seat inspection and installation fair
GILROY – Actor Erik Estrada will join CHP officers during the ‘Car Seat Inspection and Installation Fair’ on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gilroy Crossing Shopping Center, 6705 to 6975 Camino Arroyo. CHP officers will inspect, install, and, if necessary, replace car seats for local residents.
New car seats for participants who have broken, outdated, or recalled car seats are being donated by 21st Century Insurance.
The event is free of charge, but service is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Poetry in Garlic City
GILROY – The Garlicky Group of Poets will hold its monthly poetry reading on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Gilroy Public Library, located at the corner of Rosanna and Sixth streets.
Public participation is free and encouraged.

Spend a morning in the park Â
GILROY – Bonfante Gardens hosts ‘Saturday Morning in the Park’ from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday.
Join horticulturist Richard Soria on a tour of Bonfante Gardens, located at 3050 Hecker Pass Highway.
There will be an emphasis on plant identification of shrub, trees, annuals, perennials and of course circus trees.
The fee includes admission to the park and free parking. Ages 16 years and up are welcome. Registration fee is $25 or $30 to non-residents.

GILROY – Beth Proudfoot, Director of the East of Eden Writing Conference will speak at Barnes & Noble, 6825 Camino Arroyo, on ‘How to Get the Most Out of a Writers Conference: The Do’s and Don’ts of Winning the Contest, Schmoozing with the Right People and Wowing an Agent’ on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m.
Whether you’re an experienced conference-goer or a newbie amateur with a great story, you’ll appreciate the facts and strategies, wit and wisdom in this presentation.
Proudfoot will present the inside scoop on which writers conferences to go to and how to use your time and money wisely once you’re there.
She is a professional speaker noted for her engaging, humorous style, and her experience on both sides of the podium will be helpful to anyone wondering if a writers conference is right for them.
Jeepers creatures
GILROY – Find your wild side during ‘Creature Feature, Reptiles and Amphibians’ at Coyote Lake Park, 10840 Coyote Lake Road, from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

Round up spay funds
GILROY – Petco, 8767 San Ysidro Ave., hopes to break the cycle of pet overpopulation with their annual ‘Round Up/Spay Today Fundraiser,’ now through Sunday.
Customers are encouraged to ’round up’ purchases to the next highest dollar to raise money for local animal welfare organizations that offer spay/neuter programs or education.
Also, 10 percent of all funds raised will go to SPAY/USA, the largest spay/neuter advocacy and referral program in the world.

GILROY – The Gilroy High class of 1994 will hold its 10 year class reunion on Aug. 21 at the San Jose Hilton and Towers.

Be part of the music
GILROY – Rehearsals for the opening concert of the South Valley Symphony will be held Aug. 25, beginning at 7:15 p.m. in the band room at Ascension Solorsano Middle School, 7121 Grenache Way.
Openings exist throughout the string section including violin, viola, cello and contrabass and while no auditioning is required, prospective musicians should have a working knowledge of reading music.
Position openings also exist in the trombone, French horn and percussion sections. The orchestra will perform a series of five concerts in the season.
There is no cost to enroll, all registration fees are paid for through fund raising efforts, donations, and grants by the orchestra’s board of directors.

GILROY – Saint Mary School presents ‘Casino Nite’ on Saturday, Sept. 18 with dinner at 6 p.m., games from 7 to 10 p.m. and dessert and prizes until 11 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cullen Hall.
Cost of $50 per person includes appetizers, Santa Maria-style tri-tip and chicken barbecue, dessert, prizes, two drink tickets and $25 in chips to begin play. Guests can even win a trip to beautiful Cabo San Lucas. Ages 21 and older only, please.

GILROY – Residents can now call the ‘Information Express,’ a 24-hour telephone access system that connects callers to general city information. The system allows callers to access information on subjects from building and construction to utilities. A ‘fax on demand’ feature also allows residents to be faxed forms such as building permits and water and sewer rates.
