Free adult computer classes are held the second Tuesday of every month, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., at Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna (at Sixth Street).

Pet adoption fair

SAN MARTIN – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) needs help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals currently at the shelter and in foster homes.

Please come to the FOSMAS petfair on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., at Petco, Morgan Hill (corner of Tennant and Monterey).

Stop by to find a new furry friend; make a donation to help cover spay/neuter, food, and litter expenses; or sign-up to volunteer for the shelter.

The Ohlone way

GILROY – Chitactac-Adams County Park presents the ‘Ohlone Ways; from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Discover how the native Ohlone people lived and used natural resources along Uvas Creek for their everyday needs.

Participate in a guided tour with activities. Great for all ages. Chitactac is located at the intersection of Watsonville and Burchell Roads.

GILROY – The City of Gilroy Community Services Department Recreation Division presents ‘Summer Concerts in the Park’ at the Christmas Hill Park Amphitheater on the second Sunday of each month, from 5 to 7 p.m. This Sunday, the Ritmo band will rock the house as the ultimate tribute to Santana. Finally, Silver Creek will prove their the ‘most entertaining country band in Northern California’ on Sept. 12. Admission is free. Proceeds from concession stand will benefit Youth Programs.

GILROY – Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will host ‘Basic Bookkeeping for the Small Business Owner’ from noon to 3 p.m., and ‘Starting Your Own Business’ from 5:30 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 10, in the Dry Creek Village 8351 Church St., Bldg. E.

Get control of your business with basic, written (no computers), double entry bookkeeping system, along with simple filing and record keeping techniques. Business banking, auto and petty cash records and working with an accountant will also be touched on.

Learn how to get started the right way an overview of marketing essentials, produce selection, business goal setting, legal issues, licenses required, risk evaluation, bookkeeping, financing, and management issues. GILROY – The American Red Cross will host a blood drive on Thursday, Aug. 12, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. In order to give blood, you must be 17 years or older, weigh no less than 110 pounds and enjoy general good health. Donors are also required to provide identification. Preferred identifiers include a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card. ice cream social

GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society invites everyone to celebrate summer the old fashioned way with an ‘Ice Cream Social’ on Thursday, Aug. 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Willey Cultural Center, 140 Fifth St. Enjoy yummy ice cream with homemade toppings and ragtime piano music played by local virtuoso Candace Fazzio. The public is invited for $5 per person, or join the Society that evening to get in free. George and Genelle Azevedo will also provide antique car rides for only $5 per person.

Proceeds will benefit the Society’s Newspaper Preservation Project for the Gilroy Museum.

Poetry in Garlic City

GILROY – The Garlicky Group of Poets will hold its monthly poetry reading on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 3:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Gilroy Public Library, located at the corner of Rosanna and Sixth streets. Public participation is free and encouraged.

Spend a morning in the park  

GILROY – Bonfante Gardens hosts ‘Saturday Morning in the Park’ on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Join horticulturist Richard Soria as he takes you on a tour of Bonfante Gardens, located at 3050 Hecker Pass Highway. There will be an emphasis on plant identification of shrub, trees, annuals, perennials and of course Circus Trees. Fee of $25 for residents and $30 for non-residents includes admission to the park and free parking. Ages 16 years and up are welcome.

GILROY – Find your wild side during ‘Creature Feature, Reptiles and Amphibians’ at Coyote Lake Park, 10840 Coyote Lake Road, from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Aug. 15. Meet some slippery looking creatures that call the park home and discover their secrets through games and activities. Meet at the park office.

Play bridge

GILROY – Gilroy Assistance League is sponsoring its annual ‘Bridge Round Robin.’ It involves five games, one per month from October to March (except December). Each player is asked to donate $5 per game, for a total of $25. Rules and a schedule will be mailed to each player. Prize amounts will be based on the total number of games played. Space is limited.
