Be a Junior Ranger

GILROY – Coyote Lake County Park is having a free Junior Ranger program for kids 9 to 12 years old. Learn about the roles of a Park Ranger, plants and animals in the park, and the Ohlone people who once lived here. Junior Rangers meet six times from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 17, 24 and 31, and April 7, 21 and 28. Details and registration: 846-5632.

Get outside

GILROY – Do you enjoy working with people and the outdoors? The docent population at Bonfante Gardens, a nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers who would like to work in a beautiful garden setting. Previous horticulture experience of any sort is helpful but not a requirement. Help out your ‘hood

GILROY – The City of Gilroy Housing and Community Development, Gilroy Police Department Neighborhood Resource Unit, United Neighborhoods of Santa Clara County and South County Housing present “Gilroy Neighborhood Academy 2004,” at Krazy Koyote Restaurant, 8337 Church St., from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m.

• On Tuesday, March 23, the theme Crime Prevention/Safe Neighborhoods will feature information on 9-11 versus non-emergency calls, gang awareness, graffiti and neighborhood watch.

• On Tuesday, March 30, “Building Your Neighborhood Association” will teach organizing and running a meeting, encouraging participation and building a stronger association.

Dine for St. Patrick’s

GILROY – St. Joseph’s Family Center will host “St. Patrick’s Dinner” on Saturday, March 13, at the St. Mary Auditorium, 11 First St. Enjoy an evening of fun, frolic and festivities. Adopt a furry friend

MORGAN HILL – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter will hold a pet adoption fair Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7, from noon to 5 p.m., at Petco, located at the corner of Tennant and Monterey. Many animal companions are in need of homes and families. Adopt a new addition to your family, donate to cover other furry friends’ expenses or sign-up to volunteer at the Shelter. MORGAN HILL – The Home Composting Education Program for Santa Clara County will hold a free “Composting Basics” workshop on Wednesday, March 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. Discover how to recycle old yard waste into useful soil. Work in the water this summer

MORGAN HILL – The Morgan Hill Recreation and Community Services Division will hold a hiring fair for temporary and seasonal positions at the new Aquatics Center on Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., near the swimming pool on the Live Oak High School campus, 1505 E. Main Ave.

The center, due to open in June, is located on Condit Road, between Tennant and Barrett avenues. Some new employees will also work at the Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.

Job openings are for lifeguards, recreation leaders, swimming instructors, cashiers, custodial, head lifeguards, lead instructors and more. People interested in water-based jobs must come prepared to change and swim, as they will be required to do a swimming test as part of this process.
