Open House
GILROY – Las Animas School is hosting its annual ‘Open House for the Dual Immersion Program’ at 6L:30 p.m., Thursday, May 27, at the school, 8450 Wren Ave.The public is welcome to attend and learn what was accomplished in the 2003-04 school year.
Patriotic Parade
GILROY – Celebrate the lives of those who bought our freedoms at Gilroy’s seventh annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 31.
Memorial Day activities kick off at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Supervisor Don Gage and Mayor Al Pinheiro will speak. Wayne Cegelske, VFW Post Commander, will lead an invocation.
At 11 a.m., the parade commences along Tenth Street. The CALSTAR Helicopter and P-51 Mustangs will fly over, then the Gilroy High School Marching Band, floats, custom cars, street rods, the San Jose Sharks fire engine, Gilroy Fire and Police equipment, marchers from many of Gilroy’s organizations and local veterans will parade down Tenth Street.
Jenny Belcher is this year’s Grand Marshal, those first female to be honored.
After the parade, attend the ‘Family Fund Day’ at Christmas Hill Park, featuring a rock-climbing wall, bounce houses, clowns and a balloon artist. Custom cars will be displayed, as well as the CALSTAR helicopter (subject to availability).

Be smart this summer
GILROY – Gilroy High School Summer School Program is now enrolling students for their summer program.
Classes start June 21 for the first semester and July 12 for the second semester. Summer school applications are available at the Student Services Office at GHS or at the Mt. Madonna Continuation High School Office.
Programs will be held at Brownell Middle School and Mt. Madonna High School campuses due to construction at GHS.

Celebrate 35 years of rides
SAN MARTIN – San Martin Horsemen’s Association celebrates 35 years of tradition sponsoring the Gilroy Hot Springs Coe Park NATRC Trail Ride Friday through Sunday, May 28 through May 30. Riders, workers and sponsors welcomed. Pre-registration is required.

Wild barbecue
SAN MARTIN – Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (WERC) is hosting a ‘Barbecue and Auction’ from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 19, at the San Martin Pumpkin Patch, 13865 Monterey Road.
Enjoy a barbecue with all the trimmings, bid on unique auction items, including attendance at a bobcat release. Also, have a chance at great opportunity drawings and meet the educational animals, and request your favorite songs from noon to 1:30 p.m. with Perry Productions DJ services.
Help keep the wildlife wild and have fun too!
Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under.

Save a cat and rid rodents
SAN MARTIN – The San Martin Animal Shelter has many cats that do not wish to be pets.
These independent cats are beautiful and healthy. They would love to pay their own way by taking care of your rodent problems in exchange for food and shelter.
Cats will be altered and vaccinated prior to placement. A $25 tax-deductible donation to FOSMAS (Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter) helps cover the cost of their veterinary care.
FOSMAS will pay the remaining fees.
