Kidnapping grandmother still at large

Morgan Hill police continue to look for the grandmother of an 11-month-old boy in connection with a custody-related kidnapping. A legal advocacy group has contacted MHPD on her behalf but will not reveal her location.

Police Lt. Joe Sampson said a representative from the group assured him the child was being properly taken care of. Police have issued a statewide alert for the boy’s maternal grandmother, Marion Smith, 52, of Morgan Hill.

Noah Serrano was left Saturday with the grandmother by his mother Laura Cadei.

She told police that when she returned to Smith’s residence to pick up her son, she found the locks on the residence had been changed, and Smith was not answering her cell phone.

According to Sampson, there was some discussion between the mother and Smith about a relationship the younger woman was involved in. There was also a disagreement, Sampson said, about the future of the relationship with the child’s father.

“We believe the grandmother wants to hold the child until she can obtain custody of him, but she’s going about this in the wrong way, not in a legal or lawful manner,” Sampson said.

Cadei has full custody of Noah.

Smith is believed to be driving a silver 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, possibly with paper license plates from an unknown dealership.
