Ride safely for free on New Year’s Eve buses
SAN JOSE – Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will continue its annual tradition of providing free rides on New Year’s Eve, but this year VTA will expand the free service through New Year’s Day. Free service will be offered on all VTA bus and light rail lines from 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 11:59 p.m. on New Year’s Day. GPD changes hours for viewing Megan’s Law CD
GILROY – The Friday viewing hours for the Megan’s Law CD-ROM at the Gilroy Police Department will be changed to Wednesdays between 6 and 8 p.m. The Tuesday session from 9 to 11 a.m. will remain the same. The viewing time is limited to 15 minutes per sitting and a total of 30 minutes per business day. The citizen may take handwritten notes but may not download or photograph any information from the CD. There is no cost to the citizen. Details: 846-0350.
Volunteers needed!
GILROY – Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy has a constant need for volunteers. Adult volunteers are needed in patient services areas such as skilled nursing and infant-hearing screening. Volunteers are also needed in the gift shop and the information desk. People interested in volunteering must help out on at least two 3.5-hour shifts at the hospital each month. They need to fill out an application, have an interview with Volunteer Coordinator Gail Paccioretti, and attend an orientation meeting. Volunteers must also take a free tuberculosis skin test administered by hospital nurses. Details: 848-4919.

GILROY – Gilroy High School welcomes the class of 2007 and transfer students at its information night on Thursday, Jan. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gilroy High School Theater. Students and their parents are invited to attend and learn about academic programs, extracurricular activities, sports, band and choir programs, college and career planning and school safety. After-school fitness and nutrition for teens
GILROY – After School Health and Fitness for Teens is a class for junior high and high school students (ages 12 to 18). It is co-sponsored by Gilroy Community Services and Gilroy Health and Fitness and will be held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. It will begin Jan. 7 through Feb. 20 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Gilroy Health and Fitness Club. The class will feature nutrition, health and fitness activities, and students will learn how to make and eat easy, healthy snacks. Students will also learn about how the body moves and the importance of activity while participating in aerobic/weight training classes. Instructors are Heidi Sanchez who is a registered dietician and Ariana Stauble who is a certifiedpersonal trainer. The class fee is $15 for residents and $18 for non-residents. Do something wild
MORGAN HILL – The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center is currently accepting applications for volunteers. WERC is the only facility in south Santa Clara County permitted to care for orphaned, injured and sick native wildlife. The organization works under the California Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. Duties range from office work, fundraising and community outreach to cleaning, feeding and caring for injured, orphaned and sick native wildlife. All volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers must work a three-hour shift at least once a week and are asked to make a four-month commitment. Details: 779-WERC.
