Storm took out power in several Gilroy homes
GILROY – Thousands of homes in Gilroy joined the 585,000 throughout the Bay Area that were without electricity for varying periods of time during the year’s first large storm last weekend.
From Thursday night to Sunday morning Pacific Gas and Electric received nearly 600,000 reports of down power lines in the Bay Area – the largest total since 1998, said PG&E Spokesman Jeff Smith.
PG&E recorded outages in several parts of Gilroy during the storm, but because of the large volume of homes without power Smith can’t say exactly how many homes in Gilroy lost power. Most of the power outages were a result of downed trees falling into power lines, Smith said.
During the weekend PG&E crews replaced 90 power poles in the Bay Area and restrung 90 miles worth of wire. Smith said the first large storm of the year is usually the worst for PG&E because the dry ground cannot handle the moisture and trees lose their foundations.
