Gilroy EDC wins PG&E grant
Gilroy – The Gilroy Economic Development Corporation has received a $6,000 grant from PG&E to help attract new businesses to Gilroy. The Gilroy EDC is one of 63 nonprofit organizations in Northern and Central California that shared a total $379,000 in grant funding.
Poker tourney benefits programs
Gilroy – The second annual Texas Halloween Hold ‘Em Tournament, hosted by the Gilroy Community Services Department, takes place at 10am Saturday Oct. 28 at the Gilroy Senior Center.
Team registration for the one-day recreational event has started. A maximum of 27 teams of four persons, 18-and-older, will be accepted. The team entry fee is $60, with all proceeds used to benefit the department’s senior, teen and youth programs.
The Halloween Hold ‘Em was the most successful of the eight tournaments offered within the past 15 months by the department. Eight tables of players began play. The tournament is prepared to handle up to 12 tables of players. Volunteers handle the role of dealers. Table sponsors assist with souvenirs and snacks.
The entry deadline is 5pm today.

‘Soul Terrain’ auditions
Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie Present auditions for “Soul Terrain.” Motown meets the jungle in this all singing, all dancing wild revue.
Auditions will be held on Saturday, at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St.. Ages 5 to 10 audition at 1pm, ages 11 to 14 at 2:30pm and ages 15 to 18 at 4pm. Please prepare to sing a short song without music and wear comfortable clothing.

Real Women Have Curves reading
Gilroy – The Gavilan College Theatre Club will stage a reading of Josephina Lopez’s Real Women Have Curves at 6:30pm Monday in the main campus’ theater.
The story’s protagonist is Ana, a first generation Mexican-American teen living in the predominately Latino community of East Los Angeles. Freshly graduated from high school, Ana receives a full scholarship to Columbia University.
Her traditional, old-world parents feel that now is the time for Ana to help provide for the family, not the time for college. Torn between her mainstream ambitions and her cultural heritage she agrees to work with her mother at her sister’s downtown sewing factory.
Over the summer she learns to admire the hardworking team of women who teach her solidarity and teamwork. Still at odds with what her mother expects of her, Ana realizes that leaving home to continue her education is essential to finding her place in the world.
The event is free. The college is located at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
MySpace seminar
Gilroy – The public is invited to attend a free seminar staged by Mount Madonna School titled “Raising a Moral Child in the MySpace Era,” from 7 to 8pm Oct. 26 in the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St. Sarada Diffenbaugh, Mount Madonna principal and educator, will lead the discussion and talk about the key principles needed to raise an ethical child.
Ride for youth
Gilroy – The Bonfante Harvest Ride will return to Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy Saturday, and will offer 50K to 100K and 100 mile recreational rides for serious cyclists. The ride attracts cyclists from all over the state and includes exhibits, a meal and swap meet at Bonfante Gardens base camp.
Proceeds from the event benefit sports and recreational groups including sports programs at Gilroy High and Gilroy’s Parks and Recreation Department. Fees for the ride vary by distance and include discounted admission to Bonfante Gardens.

Enchilada Fiesta
Gilroy – The Antonio Del Buono Violin program is holding their annual fundraiser dinner Oct. 27 from 4 to 7pm with a violin concert at 7pm. Tickets are $7 adults and $3 kids at the door. Silent auction and raffle will be held as well.

It’s time for the Halloween Run
Gilroy – The 15th annual Halloween Run co-sponsored by Gavilan Joggers and Striders and the Gilroy Recreation Dept. will be Saturday, Oct. 28. Registration is at 7:30am. Two races: 10k race is at 9am and 5k at 9:15am.

It’s Teen Read Week
Gilroy – Teen Read Week; an annual, national promotion of teen reading, runs through Saturday. The Gilroy Library will celebrate teen reading by having a display of the books nominated for best books by teens. Teens can check out the books and vote for their favorite titles either in the library or online. Ballots turned in at the library will receive a prize, one per person. All ballots will be entered into a drawing at the end of the week.

Fall Festival fun
San Martin – From 11am to 1pm Saturday about 50 Las Madres kids, up to age 5, will dress up in Halloween costumes and enjoy running around San Martin County Park, doing arts and crafts, picking out pumpkins and eating a potluck.
On Tuesday Oct. 24 from 9:30 to 11am at Gilroy Senior Center, there will be a costume party. About 20 Gilroy Las Madres kids, up to age 5, get dressed up in Halloween costumes and “entertain” the seniors. A craft project and snacks complete the fun.
Piece By Piece Quilters meeting
Morgan Hill – Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church on the Southeast corner of West Dunne and DeWitt avenues. The group meets from 6:30 to 9pm.
