Election officers needed
Gilroy – The Registrar of Voters is looking for civic-minded volunteers to serve at the polls on election day. Becoming a volunteer is a great way for voters to serve their communities and contribute to the democratic process. Election officers are paid a stipend of $85 or more.
Anyone who is registered to vote in California can be an election officer.

Spooktacular Program
Gilroy – The Gavilan STAR Program is now accepting registration for Fall STAR 2006. Saturday, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9am to 12pm, cost $99. Fall STAR is a Saturday morning acting workshop for students ages 8 to 16.
Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of theatre and participate in writing and rehearsing Halloween themed skits. Fall STAR ends with a final performance in the Gav TV studio.

Republicans meet

Blessing of the Animals
Gilroy – Animal owners bring your pets to St Stephen’s Church, 651 Broadway at 10am Saturday, to receive the Blessing of the Animals. Please have your pets contained with leashes or crates. Bring a pooper-scooper.
Teen Read Week kicks off
Gilroy – Oct. 14 to 21 is Teen Read Week; an annual, national promotion of teen reading. The Gilroy Library will celebrate teen reading by having a display of the books nominated for best books by teens. Teens can check out the books and vote for their favorite titles either in the library or online.
Ballots turned in at the library will receive a prize, one per person. All ballots will be entered into a drawing at the end of the week.

‘Soul Terrain’ auditions
Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie Present auditions for “Soul Terrain.” Motown meets the jungle in this all singing, all dancing wild revue. Auditions will be held Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. Ages 5 to 10 at 1pm, ages 11 to 14 at 2:30pm and ages 15 to 18 at 4pm. Please prepare to sing a short song without music and wear comfortable clothing.

Event aids youth sports
Gilroy – The Bonfante Harvest Ride will return to Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy Saturday, Oct. 21, and will offer 50K to 100K and 100 mile recreational rides for serious cyclists. The Ride attracts cyclists from all over the state and includes exhibits, a meal and swap meet at Bonfante Gardens base camp. Proceeds from the event benefit sports and recreational groups including at Gilroy High and Gilroy’s Parks and Recreation Department. Fees for the ride vary by distance and include discounted admission to Bonfante Gardens.

MySpace seminar
Gilroy – The public is invited to attend a free seminar staged by Mount Madonna School titled “Raising a Moral Child in the MySpace Era,” from 7 to 8pm, Oct. 26 in the Gilroy Library. Sarada Diffenbaugh, Mount Madonna principal and educator, will lead the discussion. The Gilroy library is located at 7387 Rosanna St.
