– October is Fire Prevention Month, which means firefighters
have a lot of people to talk to. Gilroy Fire Department has teamed
up with other Santa Clara County fire departments, the National
Fire Protection Association, American Red Cross and other emergency
service providers to increase public a
wareness and preparedness during this special month.
Public Safety Day at Bonfante
GILROY – October is Fire Prevention Month, which means firefighters have a lot of people to talk to. Gilroy Fire Department has teamed up with other Santa Clara County fire departments, the National Fire Protection Association, American Red Cross and other emergency service providers to increase public awareness and preparedness during this special month.
This year’s theme, “When Fire Strikes: Get Out! Stay Out!” stresses the importance of developing a “home fire escape plan” and regular review of the escape plan to ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.
Gilroy Fire Department will be conducting various presentations and education activities in schools throughout the month. They will be holding Public Safety Day at Bonfante Gardens on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Gilroy Fire Department will perform a fire safety play on the mainstage at 1 and 2:30 p.m. The Gilroy Fire Department will also participate in Wal-Mart’s Safety Day on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the Fire Department’s planned appearances on channel 17, the Gilroy government channel, they will be broadcasting children’s fire safety videos at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily during this Fire Prevention Month. 49er cheerleaders at Applebee’s
GILROY – San Francisco 49ers cheerleaders will be at Applebee’s bar and grill, 8220 Arroyo Circle, today from 6 to 10 p.m. The cheerleaders will be selling their 2004 calendars and authographing them also. The calendars cost $25, with part of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Applebee’s will also be giving away breast cancer pins with a $5 donation.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation was established in 1982. Together with other donors it has raised nearly $6 million for the fight against breast cancer. Details: Jennifer Herrera at 848-5600.
Cruiz’ on over to Cruiza Palooza
GILROY – Gilroy Premium Outlets will present Cruiza Palooza on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. The family event will coincide with the Jelly Belly Store grand opening and feature Monterey Bay PT Cruiser Club, Merced Runabouts Mini Dune Buggies, PT Cruisers of Silicon Valley, Jelly Belly Corporate Race Car, South Valley Street Rods, Gilroy Police Dare PT Cruiser, jump houses and more. There will also a be a hot dog cookout for $3.
The event will benefit Rebekah Children’s Services. Rebekah’s offers foster care, adoption, 24-hour residential care and prevention/education services in Gilroy schools, among other services. Details: Eleanor Villarreal at

Seniors host spaghetti feed
GILROY – The Senior Advisory Board hosts Spaghetti Night Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. Dinner includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and a drink. Waggin’ Trail Dog Walk
GILROY – Join County Parks and Animal Control staff on a fun-filled dog walk with games and prizes on Sunday, Oct. 12. A light lunch will be provided. Meet at the Coyote Lake Ranger Station at 10 a.m. All dogs must be leashed. Reservations required. Details: 842-7800.
Tamale fiesta
GILROY – The Steven D. Mendivil Memorial Scholarship Benefit hosts their Fourth Annual Tamale Fiesta on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Veteran’s Hall, 74 West Sixth St. Come enjoy entertainment, a raffle and wonderful tamales to sponsor education.
