Salvation Army helps youth get ready for school

Gilroy – The Salvation Army of Gilroy took 25 children shopping for back-to-school clothes Saturday. These children were from Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill.

Each child had $100 to spend and was escorted through the store by chaperones.

Many of these same children and others from the community have already received backpacks filled with school supplies through The Salvation Army program in Gilroy.

Free family movie night in downtown Gilroy

Gilroy – Bring your chairs and your popcorn bowl and join us downtown movie nights.

The movies start at 7pm and will be shown in the parking lot of Eigleberry Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. This week’s feature is “Clam Bake,” starring Elvis Presley. Popcorn is free. Movie Night will be held each Wednesday evening through Sept. 20.

Hot August Nights at Bonfante Gardens

Gilroy – Dust off your poodle skirt and break out the pomade! Hot August Nights is sure to make you feel cool again!

See some of the hottest classic cars in Gilroy Thursday, cruise down the aisles while visiting the more than 70 business vendors and enjoy the taste of Gilroy from local restaurants and wineries.

Located at Bonfante Gardens, 3050 Hecker Pass Highway, the Business Showcase has no entrance fee and no parking fee. Bonfante Gardens is open for the business showcase from 12 to 7pm.

South Valley symphony rehearsals begin today

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will begin today. Openings exist for violin, viola, and cello and contrabass positions. Openings also exist for French horn, trumpet and trombone positions in the brass section. The woodwind section currently has openings in the clarinet and oboe sections.

Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 9:45pm at the Ascension Solorsano band room, 7121 Grenache Way.

Car wash benefits girl’s softball team

Gilroy – Support the Gilroy Chaos Sports Organization Girl’s Fast Pitch Softball team, to get to the 2006 Fall Classic Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. They will be holding a car wash from 8am to 4pm Sept. 2 at Jim’s Auto, 298 First St.

The cost is $5 for small cars and $10 for trucks, vans and SUVs. Any other donations are greatly appreciated.

Kittens, kittens and more kittens available

Morgan Hill – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) need help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals currently at the shelter and in foster homes.
