SANTA CLARA COUNTY – The USDA Farm Service Agency is accepting nominations for 2003 county committee elections. Nomination forms are due by Friday, Sept. 5. If you have an interest in providing guidance on federal farm program issues impacting local farmers and ranchers, then you are encouraged to submit a nomination. All landowners, operators and tenants of legal voting age on farms within Santa Clara County are eligible to serve on the FSA Committee and vote in the election. Step back in Gilroy history

Recycle, reduce, re-use

GILROY – Gilroy, Morgan Hill and South Santa Clara County are celebrating their commitment to reducing waste by sponsoring a South County Garage Sale Day on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6 and 7. Cub Scouts welcome barbecue

GILROY – All boys from first-grade through fourth-grade and their families are invited to join the Boy Scouts of America in the Cub Scouting program. SAN MARTIN – The San Martin 4-H club is hosting enrollment night Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the San Martin Lions Club, 12415 Murphy Ave. Members will be providing a display of what will go on during the year and answering questions. Local artists exhibit their work

GILROY – Gilroy Community Services Department will hold the Gilroy Art and Culture Exhibit Sept. 11 through 14, at the Willey Cultural Center, 1400 Fifth St. All entries are due to the Willey Cultural Center on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 3 to 6 p.m. The Artists’ Award Reception will be help on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 11 and 12 and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14. Pieces can be picked up on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Exhibits will be painting, drawing, printmaking, 3-dimensional, watercolor, mixed media, digital art, photography and textiles. Saddle up with the Range Riders

GILROY – The Gilroy Range Riders Cowboy Mounted Shooters are holding practice on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Horse Discovery Center located at 2440 Dryden Road, Gilroy. Practice will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Monthly practices are normally held on the first Saturday of each month. They will also be having additional practices in La Honda/Highway 84 at the Coastside Rodeo grounds/Driscoll Ranch on Saturday, Sept. 13. Details: www.gilroyrangeriders.com.

Free movie under the stars

MORGAN HILL – The Chamber of Commerce will host its second annual “Movie Night Under the Stars” at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center on Saturday, Sept. 6, at dusk.

The free event will begin at 4 p.m. with a family funfest featuring dance, martial arts and gymnastics demonstrations. Food, microbrew beers and local wines will be available. Kids’ activities including a three-story slide, jump house and crafts will also be on hand.

The movie, “The Sandlot,” is rated PG and will be projected on an outdoor screen at dusk. The Community and Cultural Center is at Monterey and Dunne Avenue at 17000 Monterey Road in the downtown Morgan Hill.

Join the midnight ride

MORGAN HILL – A moonlight guided horse ride and potluck will take place at Henry Coe Park on Saturday, Sept. 6. Bring water, a dish to share and your own horse and explore the southern end of Coe Park under the light of the silvery moon. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. followed by the horse ride at 7 p.m. Meet at Hunting Hollow Entrance. Reservations required. Buy one, get one free

MORGAN HILL – The Friends of the Morgan Hill Library will have a special, back-to-school book sale on Saturday, Sept. 6. All regularly priced books will be buy one, get one free. The sale of used books will take place in the meeting room of the library, 17575 Peak Ave., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A preview of the “buy one, get one free” sale will be held on Friday, Sept. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for members of the Friends. New members may join at the door that night. Refreshments will be served.
