GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy Community Blood Drive on Thursday, June 10, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.
To donate blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.
Donors are required to provide identification before donating blood. Preferred identification includes a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card.

Award local helpers
GILROY – Nominations are now being accepted for the Gavilan College 2004 Community Spirit Awards. The awards recognize contributions to the communities that form the Gavilan Joint Community College District. Each year, three sets of awards are presented, for the communities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Benito County. This year, for the first time, nominations are being solicited from the community at large.
Any individual, organization or business in the Gavilan College District (exclusive of Gavilan College employees) may be nominated. Anyone who lives or works in the district may submit a nomination.
The first set of awards for 2004 will be presented for the community of Morgan Hill at the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce Breakfast on Sept. 2. Nomination forms with selection criteria are available online. Completed nominations for the Morgan Hill award should be returned by Friday, June 11. (Deadlines for the Gilroy and Hollister awards will be announced at a later date.)

Walk for a cure
GILROY – The third annual American Cancer Society ‘Relay for Life’ event will be Saturday, June 19 through Sunday, June 20 at Christmas Hill Ranch Site, 7050 Miller Ave.The event raises awareness of cancer in the communities, highlighted by a Luminaria Ceremony, an opportunity to pay tribute to those who are cancer survivors or who have sadly succumbed to the disease.
On Saturday, the Opening Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a Survivor Lap. A Survivor Reception will be held at 11 a.m. The Luminaria Ceremony will be at 9 p.m
On Sunday, the Closing Ceremony will be at 10 a.m.
Registration deadline is Friday, June 11 by 10 a.m. Cost/registration fee is $150. Team commitment fee is required by teams for participation.
Team members are also asked to raise at least $100. Survivors attending only for Survivor Lap can just show up; no fee required.
