Gilroy teen crashes on Highway 101

Gilroy – The driver who crashed into a tree on the east side of U.S. Highway 101 near Highway 25 Thursday was a 16-year-old teen from Gilroy, according to the California Highway Patrol’s collision report. His name is being withheld because he is a minor.

The teen was driving a 1994 Toyota Landcruiser northbound on 101, north of Highway 25, about 5:15pm. While traveling at an unknown rate of speed, the vehicle drifted into the center divider. The teen turned his vehicle to the right and applied the brakes, which caused the Landcruiser to travel across both lanes of the highway and strike the tree.

A CALSTAR helicopter transported the teen – who suffered lacerations to his head – to Stanford Medical Center. He was expected to fully recover.

Concert, auction benefits students

Gilroy – The South Valley Ballet’s dance concert and dessert auction will raise money for the SVB scholarship fund, community outreach and our up-coming three-act ballet “La Fille Mal Gardee.”

It will be the first three-act repertoire ballet ever done in the South Valley. The group has been operating as a non-profit for 30 years as Morgan Hill Dance Company, but this year they applied for non-profit status and changed the name to South Valley Ballet, hoping the new name represented the group better, since they have dancers from Gilroy, Hollister, Los Banos, Aromas, Watsonville, San Jose, Morgan Hill and Salinas.

The Spring Dance Concert and Dessert Auction is a fundraiser for the new company and scholarships. The dessert auction will be held today at 7pm at the Gilroy High School Theater, 750 W 10th St.

Water district named ‘green business’

San Jose – The Santa Clara Valley Water District has been named a “green business” by the Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission of Santa Clara County.

To be certified as a green business the district had to prove compliance with regulations for hazardous waste management, hazardous material storage and wastewater discharge.

Last year, the district installed solar panels to meet 20 percent of its energy needs and expects to begin work this summer on a natural gas co-generation plant to meet the rest of its energy needs.

The district has also begun to replace its oldest vehicles with hybrid vehicles. The county began the program in 1999.
