Science comes alive at Gav
GILROY – Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., will host “Science Alive!” on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the student center.
Science Alive is a day of hands-on work-shops that make learning science and math fun. Stud-ents in grades five through eight and their parents can choose among 16 different workshops, including “Robots and You,” presented by Mark Leon of NASA, where participants will get to operate a robot hands-on; “What’s in the Box,” presented by Gavilan instructors Vic Robinson and Janet Conrey, in which students will take a computer apart and put it back together; and “A Cow’s Eye View,” presented by Dr. Dennis Harrigan of Gilroy Veterinary Hospital, will teach students the anatomy of the eye by having them dissect a cow’s eyeball. Optional workshops “Financial Aid: Money for College” and “Preparing for High School and College – What Parents Should Know” will be offered for parents in both English and Spanish.
The day will start with check-in and a welcome address by Mark Leon of NASA. Participants will then split up and attend two morning sessions. Everyone will gather together for lunch, raffle and prizes, followed by one afternoon session. Only $10 per person, including lunch. Buses will be available to transport students at no charge from Morgan Hill and Hollister. Details: 848-4887.
Special day showcase
GILROY – The fifth annual South Valley Wedding and Special Occasion Showcase is returning to the Gilroy Elks Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway, on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exhibitors will be on-hand displaying flowers, fashions and catering. Sample cakes and find unique gifts, great travel and spa specials and creative decorating ideas for any party.
Bonfante Gardens will display new wedding packages and representatives from establishments such as San Juan Oaks, Eagle Ridge and Fortino Winery will be on-hand to show their facilities. A continuous fashion show will display the latest in formal wear and a Battle of the Bands will help to find the perfect music for a special day.

Breakfast with the Lions
SAN MARTIN – The San Martin Lions Club will hold their annual “All You Can Eat Breakfast” on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Lions Hall, adjacent to the San Martin Airport.
