Ice cream social
GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society invites everyone to celebrate summer the old fashioned way with an ‘Ice Cream Social’ from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, at the Willey Cultural Center, 140 Fifth St.
Enjoy yummy ice cream with homemade toppings and ragtime piano music played by local virtuoso Candace Fazzio. The public is invited for $5 per person, or join the society that evening to get in free.
George and Genelle Azevedo will also provide antique car rides for only $5 per person.
Proceeds will benefit the Society’s Newspaper Preservation Project for the Gilroy Museum.

Be behind the badge
GILROY – Are you between the ages of 20 and 35, and want a job that really makes a difference? Consider becoming a California Highway Patrol Officer. Right now, CHP is recruiting men and women for six-month training at the CHP Academy in west Sacramento. Once accepted, cadets are employed by the department and earn about $3,000 per month during training.

Learn about car seats
GILROY – Actor Erik Estrada will join California Highway Patrol officers during a ‘Car Seat Inspection and Installation Fair’ on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gilroy Crossing Shopping Center, 6705 to 6975 Camino Arroyo.
CHP officers will inspect, install, and, if necessary, replace car seats for local residents. New car seats for participants who have broken, outdated, or recalled car seats are being donated by 21st Century Insurance. The event is free of charge.
Service is first come, first serve basis.
Poetry in Garlic City
GILROY – The Garlicky Group of Poets will hold its monthly poetry reading on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Gilroy Public Library, located at the corner of Rosanna and Sixth streets. Public participation is free and encouraged.

Spend a morning in the park Â
GILROY – Bonfante Gardens hosts ‘Saturday Morning in the Park’ on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Join horticulturist Richard Soria as he takes you on a tour of Bonfante Gardens, located at 3050 Hecker Pass Highway.
There will be an emphasis on plant identification of shrub, trees, annuals, perennials and of course Circus Trees.
Fee includes admission to the park and free parking. Ages 16 years and up are welcome. Registration fee is $25 or $30 to non-residents.

Symphony rehearsals
GILROY – Rehearsals for the opening concert of the South Valley Symphony will be Aug. 25, beginning at 7:15 p.m. in the band room at Ascension Solorsano Middle School, 7121 Grenache Way. Openings exist throughout the string section including violin, viola, cello and contrabass and while no auditioning is required, prospective musicians should have a working knowledge of reading music. Position openings also exist in the trombone, French horn and percussion sections. The orchestra will perform a series of five concerts in the season.
There is no cost to enroll, all registration fees are paid for through fund raising efforts, donations, and grants by the orchestra’s board of directors. All interested musicians are encouraged to contact Sue Piccardo at 683-4848 or Al Navaroli at 842-3934.
Refresh your driving
GILROY – Motorists 50 and older can refresh their driving skills in the AARP Driver Safety Program on Saturday, Aug. 28. Participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety, as well as new DMV tests and laws. Three year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on auto insurance upon completion of the course. No tests will be given.
Space is limited so please make reservations in advance. Class location will be given to participants.
