Click It or Ticket
In an effort to increase seat belt use, law enforcement agencies across the nation are preparinmg for National Buckle Up America/Operation ABC (America Buckles Up Children) Mobilization, Monday through June 6.
This year’s slogan ‘Click It or Ticket’ reminds all vehicle occupants to ‘click’ their seat belts into use. Fifty-two percent of reported crashes occur within five miles of home, so no drive is too short not to buckle up.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost half of the vehicle fatalities last year were not wearing seat belts, and many could have been prevented if they had.
The maximum fine for a seat belt violation for someone 16 or older is $89 for a first offense and $191 for a second. Drivers with children under 16 who are not properly secured may receive a ‘one point count’ on their driving record and a fine of $371 for as first offense or $871 for a second offense.
