GILROY – The Catholic Ladies Aid Society recently celebrated its 116 years of charitable service to the Gilroy community. President Felicia Rosas greeted members at a potluck luncheon at Serra Cottage on Thursday, March 4. On Sunday, March 7, the celebration culminated with Mass followed by a breakfast at Serra Cottage. About 12 members and family attended the breakfast, as well as Reverend Peter Seimas.

Entertainment was provided by the ‘Side by Siders.’ One of the oldest organizations in Gilroy, the C.L.A.S. operates a religious store at St. Mary Church, subsidizes the St. Joseph Family Center and contributes to other parish and community causes.

Counting traffic

Caltrans will place traffic counters at various on- and off-ramps, overpasses, interchanges and intersections along Highways 101, 25 and 156 beginning today through April 23. The counters will count daily traffic use. Motorists should be aware of the work crews who will be placing them during daytime hours.

Load up the trash – free

GILROY – Beginning today and running through April 23, Gilroy residents can set out seven additional 32-gallon cans/bags of garbage on their regular garbage pickup day.

Residents may also drop off two bulky items for free at San Martin Transfer Station, 14070 Llagas Ave. in San Martin, until July 31.

Bulky items include mattresses, appliances and furniture.

Bring the original copy of your April billing statement to show you are a Gilroy resident.

A fee of $22 will be charged for appliances containing Freon, such as refrigerators and freezers.

Market with confidence

GILROY – The Gavilan Small Business Development Center will present “Small Business Marketing” on Wednesday, April 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Gavilan SBDC offices located at 8351 Church St., building E.

This class is an overview of basic marketing strategies. The instructor will discuss creating a plan to successfully market your business products or services. Cost is only $20 payable in advance or at the door. Due to limited space, pre-register at 847-0373.

Resumes always accepted

GILROY – The City of Gilroy Human Resources Division is constantly accepting applications for part-time positions for their programs in their Parks and Recreation Division. Program areas include: Adult and youth sports, the senior center, preschool, aquatics and special classes. Details: 846-0228.

Donate used cell phones

GILROY – Donate phones that are less than five years old and the Shelter Alliance will give Community Solutions between 50 cents and $20 for each cell phone. Call Liz Delgadillo at 846-4741 for drop-off locations.

Wanted: Your TV shows

GILROY – Local TV station Community Media Access Partnership is putting out a call for tapes from independent producers, videographers and filmmakers to help fill its four channels. Entries can be any length, though standard broadcast times are preferred, and can be supplied on SVHS, Sony-compatible mini-DVD or DVD.

Relay for Life

MORGAN HILL – The Morgan Hill Relay for Life Committee will hold their team captain meetings at the Holiday Inn Express in Morgan Hill at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20.

Morgan Hill’s Relay for Life will be held at Oakwood Country School, 105 John Wilson Way, on Saturday, May 22, starting at 10 a.m. and ending 24 hours later. There will be food, live entertainment, games, merchandise and services to enjoy throughout the day and night. Everyone is invited to come out and celebrate the fight against cancer with family, friends, co-workers, youth groups, sports organizations and neighbors by building a team that will walk for the cure.

Last year the event helped raise $145,000 for the American Cancer Society.

MORGAN HILL – The sixth annual “South Valley Wine Auction” will be held on Friday, April 23, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, located at the corner of E. Dunne Avenue and Monterey Road. The event will benefit the Morgan Hill School District’s Cross Country and Track Field Programs.
