CALIFORNIA – California State Parks will begin increasing the price of annual passes in graduated amounts as of today. The increase is part of an effort to offset budget reductions. Without the increase, it is estimated that more than 100 State Parks would have to be closed for lack of funding. The schedule for the graduated increase is as follows:

• Beginning April 15, passes will be sold at $110 each.

• Beginning May 1, passes will be sold at $115 each.

• Beginning June 1, passes will be sold at $120 each.

• Beginning July 1, passes will be sold at the full amount of $125 each.

GILROY – The Gavilan Small Business Development Center will present “Small Business Marketing” on Wednesday, April 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Gavilan SBDC offices located at 8351 Church St., building E.

Tee it up, help St. Mary

and St. Joseph’s

GILROY – Golfers eager for a spring scramble that supports a good local cause can sign up now for the annual St. Mary Golf Day slated for Eagle Ridge Golf Course on Friday, April 23. Tee off is at 11 a.m. for the four-person team tournament that benefits St. Mary Parish and the St. Joseph’s Family Center. GILROY – Live Oak Adult Day Services, 651 W. Sixth St., is in need of volunteers on a one-time or regular basis who can share their talents with the elderly at the center. MORGAN HILL – Henry Coe Park, will offer spring programs this weekend. On Saturday, April 17, “Strangers in Paradise,” a historic hike, will start at 10 a.m. Join Rick Leonard and Bud O’Hare for an easy walk while learning about the ranch buildings and the early strangers who lived there.

At 8 p.m., the evening program, ”The Birds of Coe Park” will be presented by Barbara Bessey and Kevin Gilmartin. Learn how to identify the birds of Coe Park by sight and sound.

Wildflower hikes

LOS BANOS – The public is invited to Pacheco State Park on weekends in April for a springtime hike. Join park naturalist Jennifer Morgan at 10 a.m. for a two-hour hike to view this year’s wildflower display while celebrating Pacheco State Park’s seventh anniversary. No reservations are needed. Pacheco State Park is at the top of historic Pacheco Pass: Take the Dinosaur Point Road Exit off of Highway 152 and follow the signs. The hike includes many stops to discuss the Native American and pioneer uses of the plants found, as well as local history. Be sure to bring waterproof hiking boots, layered clothing, hat, sunscreen and water.

The only fee is the $4 state park day use fee per car, which enables you to visit other state parks that same day after your hike.

Time to throw it out

GILROY – During the week of April 19 through 23, Gilroy residents can set out seven additional 32-gallon cans/bags of garbage on their regular garbage pickup day. Residents may also drop off two bulky items for free at San Martin Transfer Station, 14070 Llagas Ave., until July 31. Bring the original copy of your April billing statement to show you are a Gilroy resident. A fee of $22 will be charged for appliances containing Freon, such as refrigerators and freezers.
