Come and show support for the troops
San Jose – At 5:30pm, Wednesday, the American Red Cross’ (Santa Clara Valley Chapter) Operation: Care and Comfort Military Care Package Program will officially kick off Operation: Season’s Greetings 2004.
They will be accepting donations of care and comfort items such as hygiene and personal care products, snacks, food items, stationary and cards, socks, and underwear, and leisure items such as DVDs, CDs, puzzle books, and batteries.
Service members have been invited, as well as families of those currently serving, and being supported by the program.
All donations are used to purchase items for care packages, and to pay actual shipping costs. Everyone associated with the program, including the coordinators, are volunteers. All gifts and donations are tax deductible.
The American Red Cross is located at 2731 North First Street, San Jose, 95134. (Corner of Plumeria and North First, north of Trimble.)

Discover how owls survived in the wild
Gilroy – Discover what “tools” owls have to make them superb at surviving in the wild during “Predators on Silent Wings” from 6:30 to 8pm, Friday at Chitactac Adams County Park.
Come close to one of nature’s most graceful and magnificent creatures. Play games, dissect an owl pellet and hear Native American owl tales. Chitactac Park is located on Watsonville Road, near Burchell Road in Gilroy.

Gilroy – Explore the amazing redwood forest on a two-mile hike with a park ranger from 10am to noon Saturday.
Discover the many wonders of this unique ecosystem. Bring hiking shoes, layered clothing, water and sun protection. There is a $5 vehicle fee to enter Mt. Madonna Park.

YMCA launches fall registration
Gilroy – The YMCA of Santa Clara Valley has launched fall registration of youth and adult sports, child care and wellness programs throughout Santa Clara Valley.
The YMCA offers a wide variety of sports, youth and wellness programs in addition to child care, after school programs.

Enroll now and become a junior ranger
Gilroy – Coyote Lake County Park is starting a free junior ranger program for 9 to 11 year olds. In six sessions, children will learn about the roles of the ranger, the plants and animals in the park, and the Ohlone people. The program will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 22 through Nov. 3, from 3:30 to 5:30pm, except Oct. 6. Children must be able to attend at least four of the six programs.
