Learn basic concepts of flycasting

Gilroy – Gavilan College Community Education program presents “Introduction to Flycasting” from 10am to 2pm, Saturday.

Learn the basic concepts of flycasting, from the proper grip and stance through casting motions. Learn good casting and line pickup techniques, back forward, overhead and roll casts.

Students must supply their own fly fishing equipment. Two hours of classroom followed by two hours of casting lessons (no hooks) at Uvas Reservoir.

Participants must be at least 14 years old.

Bilingual election officers needed

Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters needs about 500 more Spanish-English bilingual election officers to provide language assistance to Spanish-speaking voters.

Election officers must be registered in Santa Clara County and have their own transportation to the polling place.

They receive a stipend between $95 and $130 for attending a training and working at the polls.

Get your ‘Tarantula Fest’ tickets now

Gilroy – Henry Coe State Park will hold its annual “Tarantula Fest and Barbecue” on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10am to 4pm.

Discover fascinating facts about tarantulas and their habitats with special guest Smokey the Bear. Enjoy tarantula art projects, hold a snake or tarantula, have your picture taken with creepy creatures, try your hand at winning prizes during the benefit raffle and learn more about tarantulas from all over the world.

Nature walks will be held every hour between 10:30am and 2:30pm. Live music will be provided by the famous Coe Park Tarantula Band. A $5 parking fee per car will be charged.

Barbecue lunch with all the fixings will be served from noon to 2pm. Meal tickets are available in advance only – no tickets will be sold at the event.

Deadline to order meal tickets is Friday. Mail a check to PRA, Henry W. Coe State park, 9100 E. Dunne Ave., Morgan Hill, CA, 95037. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope or a request to have tickets held at will call.

YMCA launches fall registration

Gilroy – The YMCA of Santa Clara Valley launched its fall registration of youth and adult sports, child care and wellness programs at its seven branches throughout Santa Clara Valley.

The YMCA offers a wide variety of sports, youth and wellness programs in addition to child care, after school and Teen Centers.

Gang task force celebrates 10 years

Gilroy – In honor of serving Gilroy youth for ten years, the Gilroy Gang Task Force invites the community to the “Gilroy Community Youth Center Ten Year Anniversary Celebration” on Oct. 1, from 5 to 7pm at the youth center, located at the corner of Sixth and Railroad streets.

Enjoy a buffet dinner and youth performances.

Step into South Valley Symphony season

Gilroy – South Valley Symphony season tickets are available by writing to: P.O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347.

By subscribing to season tickets, concert-goers will receive one free concert.

Prices per concert are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens age 60 and older and $7 for students ages 12 to 18. Season ticket prices are $75 for adults, $60 for senior citizens age 60 and older and $35 for students 12 to 18.

The season opening concert is at 7:30pm, Oct. 16, at the Gavilan College Theater and will feature local soloists, including Beverly Blount on the violin, performing Ralph Vaughn Williams’ composition, “The Lark Ascending,” as well as “March Militaire” by Franz Schubert and “The Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana.
