Silicon Valley Reads Events Come to Gilroy Library
Gilroy – Immigration, the American Dream and other themes of the Silicon Valley Reads 2007 book, “The Tortilla Curtain” by T.C. Boyle, will be discussed at the Gilroy Library Feb. 3. The free event will begin at 2pm with a 30-minute video interview with the author, followed by a talk by Catherine Barrera, a visiting professor of Latin American history.
It is one of 40 events being held throughout Santa Clara County focused on The Tortilla Curtain. Silicon Valley Reads asks everyone in the community to read the same book, at the same time and to discuss it with friends, family and coworkers.
The Tortilla Curtain is a poignant and gripping novel about two couples in Southern California who live in close proximity but are worlds apart in every other way. A chance encounter brings together the “haves” and “have-nots” with dramatic consequences.
This is the fifth year of Silicon Valley Reads, which is co-sponsored by Santa Clara County Library, the Santa Clara County Office of Education and San Jose Public Library Foundation. The goal of the program is to promote reading and literacy while building community through an open dialogue that leads to a valuable exchange of perspectives, life experiences and understanding among widely-diverse readers.
