VFW rummage sale

Gilroy – The VFW rummage sale from 8am to 1pm today at 6th and Eigleberry streets. Proceeds benefit Gavilan College scholarships.

$6,000 raised for local charities

Gilroy – The South County Realtors Association, through its Can Tree Fund, distributed $6,000 to four local charities in April. Since 1966, the members and affiliates contribute food and cash to Saint Joseph’s Family Center, Boccardo Family Living Center, St. Catherine’s Outreach Center and Crossroads Christian Reach Out Center. In 2005 their contributions totaled more than $18,000 and the goal for this year is twice that.

District extends controlled burns

Gilroy – The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has extended crop replacement, orchard pruning and attrition burns to May 31. Crop replacement fires are conducted to establish an agricultural crop in a location that formerly contained another type of crop or natural growth while orchard pruning and attrition fires are to dispose of periodic prunings and attrition losses from fruit trees, nut trees, vineyards and cane fruits.

Key dates for voters

San Jose – The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters is gearing up for the June 6 primary election and would like voters to be aware of several key dates.

– Monday is the start of absentee voting. Voters may begin requesting absentee ballots for the June election. Early voting will begin at the registrar of voters’ office, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.

– May 22 is the last day to register or re-register to vote.

Due to recent changes in federal law, voters must provide either a California driver’s license number, California identification card number or the last four digits of their social security number on their registration forms when registering or re-registering to vote.

May 30 is the last day to request an absentee ballot by mail. Requests must be received by the registrar’s office no later than 5pm. After the deadline, absentee ballots can only be obtained in person at the registrar’s office.

June 6 is election day. The polls will be open from 7am to 8pm. Absentee ballots must be also received by the registrar’s office no later than 8pm.

Vector Control District fights WNV

San Jose – The Santa Clara County Vector Control District began spraying Friday to reduce the number of adult mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile virus.

Areas to be treated are South Bay marshes near the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Treatment Facility.

The heavy rains and warm, humid weather have produced large numbers of mosquitoes in the marsh areas. About 400 acres will be treated. No residential properties fall within the areas to be treated.
