Dangerous time for teen drivers

Gilroy – Teen drivers listen up. The summer is on the horizon, graduation day is near – and you’ll be on the roads more.

But AAA of Northern California is warning you to be careful when driving. According to statistics collected by the California Highway Patrol, the number of teens killed in crashes from May through August has increased the past two years. In 2004, 548 young drivers aged 16 to 20 were killed in statewide in crashes.

The number increases due to underage drinking at proms and graduation parties, overconfidence of younger drivers, speeding, and fatigue during while driving long distances during vacations, AAA officials said.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a 16-year-old is four times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than a 21-year-old driver.

AAA launched a campaign last month to help parents and teens protect teen drivers, stapling 240,000 flyers to prom tickets and distribute safety materials to all high schools in Northern California.
