People can now report faulty Megan’s Law information

Gilroy – The state’s online sex offender registry now allows people to alert state and local law enforcement officials to information about rapists and child molesters.

The Megan’s Law database, which lists personal details about 83 convicted sex offenders in Gilroy and 63,000 offenders across the state, was launched in December, and the new “report” feature was added Monday.

Visitors to the Web site, www.MegansLaw.ca.gov, may search for offenders by name, address, city, ZIP code, county, or by school or park locations.

A phone icon in the top right corner that says “report information” provides the phone number, e-mail and mailing addresses to the Department of Justice.

Tips about a specific offender can be reported once a visitor accesses the individual’s listing on the site. The offender’s name, photo, address, personal description, list of offenses, and aliases are all provided.

From that box, people can click on a button that says “report information to DOJ,” which brings up a form where they can type information about an offender who is in violation of registration requirements or possibly living at a different address.

The form is submitted to the DOJ, which then forwards the information to the local police department.

The Web site also provides phone numbers for all the police and sheriff’s departments in the state.
